Ward 6/ANC 6C Election Guide *updated*

Posted by pqresident
October 27, 2008

The late Tip O’Neill, former Democratic speaker of the House, said “All politics is local” and with that in mind we’re focusing on the local Advisory Neighborhood Commission (ANC) elections and the associated Single Member Districts (SMDs) for downtown. If you live downtown, you live in Ward 2 or Ward 6. Today, we’ll look at Ward 6 with Ward 2, perhaps the more lively of the two, getting a once over in the next week. Check after the break for more…

What ANC and SMD do I live in?

You may want to start with the citywide map here [caution: large PDF] to figure out what ward you live in if you don’t know already. If you know you’re in Ward 6, check the Ward 6 Section C map [PDF] or the ANC 6C website to get a better feeling for which Single Member District is yours. If you live downtown and you don’t live in Ward 6, then you live in Ward 2.

SMDs for downtown condos and apartment buildings in Ward 6:

6C01 – 555 Mass, Madrigal Lofts, Sonata, Museum Square, CityVista (V, L, and K), Golden Rule, Carmel Plaza
6C09 – The Lafayette, The Clara Barton, The Pennsylvania, Market Square (East and West), Lexington Market Square (1 and 2), Avalon at Gallery Place, Court Square, Newseum Apartments, The Meridian, MassCourt, 400 Mass Ave, The Cosmopolitan, Sixth Street Flats

Who’s running for Ward 6 Councilmember?

Nobody is running because the Ward 6 chair is not up for reelection at this time. Tommy Wells is the current Ward 6 Councilmember.

Who’s running for SMD commissioner?

In Ward 6, there are four SMDs that might be of interest to our readers: 6C01, 6C02, 6C03 and 6C09. What’s simple is that only one person will be preprinted on the ballot in each of these SMDs [PDF] as follows:

6C01 – Keith Silver
6C02 – Mark Dixon
6C03 – Lena Brown
6C09 – Charley Doctor

Where do I find my polling place?

Check the DCBOEE’s online Polling Place Locator or you can check the Ward 6 polling place precinct map [PDF] to find out.

Check the DC Board of Ethics and Elections website to learn more and don’t forget to vote!

ANC6C is a well-run group and the Commissioners all work together for the good of their residents and the ANC as a whole. They have done a lot for the community and will continue to do so for two more years.

I must call you out PQLiving…and remind you that part of the Penn Quarter is in ANC2C. As many of your readers already know this ANC is so f-ed up that it will take the readers (voters) who live in the ANC to make a stand on election day. Jessica Lanza is working very hard to unseat Leroy Thorpe puppet Doris Brooks and I am hoping that your team of amazing writers may take a few posts and hit on this crucial election. Many voters do not seem to know what the ANC does for residents and I am hoping that you might devote some time highlighting Lanza and the rest of the slate of candidates in ANC2C.

Oh and to add one comment…Club Platinum is in Doris Brooks SMD but I would be willing to bet that she has no idea nor did any call from a voter in that part of the district do anything to fix the situation. But folks…that is one of the many things an effective ANC rep can do for you.

Please take a moment to get to know Jessica Lanza…her energy will be a HUGE help on issues like this one.

indeed, OffSeventh, the PQ does include part of ANC2C. on that, you are correct. no offense, but do reread the second to last sentence of the first paragraph of today’s post as it offers a hint about what we’re going to post about Ward 2. it goes like this:

“Today, we’ll look at Ward 6 with Ward 2, perhaps the more lively of the two, getting a once over in the next week.”

translation: “Ward 2…getting a once over” means we’ll be doing a similar election guide for Ward 2/ANC2C within one week’s time. we hope to run it Friday, October 31 and link to some Shaw sites so readers can take the weekend to read up on all the background they wish to. no promises on that October 31 date though…we may need the weekend to polish it up some. but it will run before election day.

we appreciate you taking the time to point out that “All politics is local.”

I think ANC 6C s falling down on the job. Agressive panhandling is really picking up, and more school-age are hanging out every day. I am voting write-in for anyone who has a plan to move the homeless into shelters and off 6th, 7th, and 8th streets.

Are the Newseum Residences in Ward 2?

Comment by pqresident on October 28, 2008 @ 11:50 am

anonymouse – the Newseum Residences are in Ward 6/ANC 6C. we’ll add to the post’s list during the next update cycle.

good catch…thanks for mentioning!

i would also add that ANC 6C has a yahoo group:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/anc6c/

they are very accessable to the community unlike the controlling half of ANC 2C.

Mike, What ANC are you in and have you brought up your concerns to your particular ANC commissioner? If so and you haven’t had a satisfactory response, please email me robamos ]at[ yahoo ]dot[ com
