MLK Memorial Opening = DC Statehood?
We’ve seen signs pop up around the neighborhood in various places linking statehood for DC to the opening of the Martin Luther King Memorial. The photo above is on 9th Street NW in Mount Vernon Square and the photo below is in the window of Tangysweet at 7th and E St NW. We get the reference and interestingly, the link on the signs points to a DC Government site, statehood.dc.gov. This had us wondering who printed the signs and put them up. The photo after the break answers the question.
It’s the DC Host Committee for the MLK Memorial Dedication who put this effort together.

George,
Do you actually live in the District? I’m guessing no if your idea is to incorporate DC into Maryland. We all know why Maryland is always picked (political nonsense) but wouldn’t Virginia be the better solution? Arlington used to be DC and as you point out, the Pentagon and Langley are already federal buildings.
DC, with more residents than Idaho and Wyoming (and approaching Alaska) should have representation. The tying it to MLK is ridiculous.
Sorry, the comment form is closed at this time.
That’s ridiculous.
Why does the celebration of Dr. King’s legacy have to be belittled by this sectarian agenda?
Statehood is not the only solution for DC residents to be represented in Congress. In fact a more equitable way to deal with DC is to give the land back to Maryland. Residents would then be represented by that state. The District can shrink down to the Mall and non residential government buildings. After all, don’t we already have federal buildings at the Pentagon and Langley, etc.?
