Nice Cans!
For the last month or so the National Park Service has been replacing the garbage cans on the Mall. Above you see the newly installed cans, bolted down to a freshly laid patch of cement. While not showy, these cans certainly look ready to take on the litter of the hordes who utilize the mall.
The old:

Finally, an honorable mention for the silver cans (or is that primer?) that are being laid down around the Washington Monument:

I like the new garbage cans as well. While walking around the Mall a couple of weeks ago, I chatted up a NPS ranger about them, who explained that they’re color coded. The bulk of them will be that standard dark brown (or green?) color, but those in close proximity to the lighter-colored monuments like the Lincoln Memorial and Washington Monument will be grey. So, that’s not primer. They should be a darker color near the Vietnam Memorial.
I saw them for the first time today. They not only have new cans but there are more of them and better placed. You used to have to go well into the Mall from 7th before you encountered a can. Now there is one near 7th — very convenient for pet waste.
AND speaking of pet waste, can I vent for a moment.
To those who do not pick up after your pooch — YOU ARE CREATING A SITUATION THAT WILL ULTIMATELY HURT THE REST OF US!
I have been taking my dog to a small patch of grass near my building. I make sure to pick up all the blown trash, and keep the area clean so that the owner of the plot is less ticked off that their lawn is a toilet.
Today, I was approached by the owner and informed that the area will probably be fenced off — because SOMEONE is not picking up after their pooch. I have heard of similar measures at other spots.
THERE ARE TOO FEW SPOTS for dogs to go to begin with. When you don’t pick up after your pet, you are making life more difficult for the rest of us.
Just do it! Bring a plastic bag. You’d wipe the butt of a baby — why not pick up poop through a plastic bag?! Its not like you have to touch it. There are devices to help you if you dont want to get near it, too.
Man, this is one of my biggest pet peeves. No pun intended.
jon,
just a word of advice. if you rant at these idiots with arguments that “it’ll affect the rest of us”, you’re doomed.
if you rant that not picking up pet waste will ultimately affect THEM, they migh listen. obviously they’re leaving on th sidwalks/grass because they don’t give a hoot about ‘the rest of us’. it needs to be brought back to them and their lives to make any sense to ’em.
THAT is a huge task.
Jon, what patch of grass are you talking about that could be fenced off? I’m a PQ resident and dog owner, and have the same concerns/disgust about neglectful owners.

the important thing is: is the volume of these cans larger? the old ones were just too small for the job, and with the park service not able to empty them 3 times a day, the overflow was just terrible.
