Oyamel Now Sports Outdoor Dining (401 7th St NW – pic)
In early August, we reported that Oyamel was going to open an outdoor seating area. As readers can see above, indeed they have. The outdoor area runs for a short span along the quieter, less travelled D Street; no outdoor seating is available on 7th Street.

Outdoor seating is always a nice touch and helps keep people on the streets at night.
Walking by these tables, however, I have seen that the tables for 2 are about 6 inches apart from each other. Might not be the best option is you’re dining with one other person and seeking any form of privacy.
As for Oyamel, I’ve unfortunately not been very impressed to-date based on my 3 dining experiences. All of the items I’ve tried have been rather bland and the selections they advertise as being “spicy” are mild at best.
It would be nice if they provided the outdoor heaters for dining. We enjoyed a great brunch outdoors at Columbia Heights (oops forgot the name of the restaurant)…but it was nice to have the outdoor heater when it was cool.
Coming up from FL this chilly weather is not our call for seating outside, but compared to other surrounding restaurants I am surprised it took this long to get seating outside.
While Oyamel was one of our first places we tried when reviewing the area before we moved here, we both have not been great fans after trying other restaurants.
Being from Austin, Texas (and I’m Mexican American), Oyamel is about the best option in this area for this style of cooking. But it is way too expensive (I guess it is the rent). But try the tortilla and the black bean soups. Excellent.
Sorry, the comment form is closed at this time.
I’ve said it before & I’ll say it again: I love this restaurant. Wish the outdoor seating had arrived earlier in the year, but I suppose I’m more likely to sit at the bar than at a table anyway.
