History on Foot: Morrison-Clark Inn
While walking through the neighborhood recently, we paused to learn more about the charming Victorian building that sits on the corner of 11th and L Sts., NW.
According to the plaque outside, the Morrison-Clark Inn began as the homes of two Civil War era developers, David Morrison and Reuben Clark. In 1923, the Morrison Home was purchased by The Women’s Army and Navy League and became an inexpensive place for enlisted men to stay while visiting Washington, DC. Eventually known as the Soldiers’, Sailors’, Marines’ and Airmen’s Club, First Ladies including Grace Coolidge, Mamie Eisenhower, and Jacqueline Kennedy frequently presided over teas and fundraisers.
The Morrison-Clark Hotel opened its doors in 1987 and is currently undergoing a major expansion. The property is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
DC Water’s Toast To Tap Celebration At CityCenter On Thu, Oct 2
Surrounding the lunch hour from 11 am to 2 pm, DC Water (formerly WASA), will host a celebration in the Park at CityCenter on I Street, NW between 10th and 11 Streets of the 40th anniversary of the EPA’s Safe Drinking Water Act enacted in 1974. There will be a water bar, food & demos, live music, and more.
We keep a jug of chilled tap water in our fridge for when we get thirsty and to fill up our portable water bottles for exercise runs around Penn Quarter and downtown. It’s one of the least expensive yet most valuable basic resources we buy. Water is life!
Funny Luke’s Lobster Sandwich Board On E Street

We’re always amused and entertained when retailers take a tailored approach to reaching customers walking around downtown DC and Penn Quarter. The king of guerilla advertising is Zipcar who put a couch and pitched a tent on both sides of 7th Street NW. Not as effective but still fun are sandwich boards such as this one with a joke applied in chalk in front of Luke’s Lobster in the 600 block of E Street NW. We look forward to the next joke – happy Friday!
Prost
The annual Oktoberfest kicked off this past weekend in Munich. There are big tents and oompah bands setting up outside of town for the next two weeks, but if you pop over to Cafe Mozart (1331 H St. NW), you can enjoy the specials they have on offer or stock up on wursts and other provisions to host your own party. Prost!
