Foodie Radar: Around the World
This is a big weekend of events in the area. If you’re staying in the neighborhood, there are a variety of opportunities to celebrate popular cultural holidays with delicious bites and sips. Here are just a few ideas for you to check out:
- Greek Easter at Zaytinya (701 9th St. NW)
- Japan’s Golden Week at Daikaya (705 6th St. NW)
- Del Campo’s Bamba Bowl (777 I St. NW)
- Derby Day at Poste (555 8th St. NW)
This should get our bellies in good shape for a day of margaritas and guacamole on Cinco de Mayo. Will you be enjoying the same with me at Oyamel (401 7th St. NW), or somewhere else?

Downtown DC Weekend Road Closures For Nike Women’s Half Marathon (4/27)
The Nike Women’s Half Marathon takes place this Sunday, April 27 beginning at 7 am and both the course start and finish are in our neighborhood (route map [PDF]). This means that for both race day and the day before (i.e. tomorrow) there will be street closures so that organizers can set up and manage the event. Notably, access to Pennsylvania Avenue from 14th St NW eastward will be most affected beginning tomorrow. See the graphic below for more info about the closures expected Saturday and Sunday.
Sports Zone Elite Now Open In Chinatown (675 H St NW)
Sports Zone Elite (675 H St NW), a retail shop focused on selling shoes and urban sportswear, opened earlier this week in the 600 block of H St NW just a few storefronts down from the 7th and H St corner. In February, we mentioned that SZE was intending to open up a store after Yo! Sushi pulled out of their intent to lease the space.
We stopped by yesterday afternoon to check out the store and enjoyed seeing all the varieties of shoes available for sale for both adults and kids. The store’s right side is devoted to shoes and the left side to pants, tops, caps, and some of the funkiest sports socks we’ve seen in a while. Staff were friendly and helpful, and SZE uses Instagram/social media and the web extensively to announce new shoe releases. Now we know where to go to replace our beat up Chuck Taylor canvas hightops, and trust us, they need replacing!
The store is open until 9 pm every day of the week except Sunday. Welcome to the downtown neighborhood Sports Zone Elite!
