Sunday Activities: Chinese New Year Parade & Super Bowl
The Chinese New Year is upon us and the Year of the Horse will have its traditional New Year parade in Chinatown on Sunday, February 2. The parade begins at 2 pm at 6th and I St NW and ends at 7th and H St NW with the Washington Chinese Youth Club performing the Lion Dance. The festival runs from 4 pm to 6 pm. The Chinese Cultural Center at 616 H Street NW will also be open and running a variety of events from Noon to 5 pm.
The Super Bowl takes place the same day and the Washington Post has a fun piece about the Penn Quarter Sports Tavern hosting both Seahawks and Broncos fans, one floor for each city’s fans. There’s no shortage of Penn Quarter establishments to watch the game with specials mentioned here including Penn Social, Hill Country, City Tap House, and Penn Quarter Sports Tavern. Kick off is at 6:30 pm.
Cozy Cups: Mystery Cocktail
This freezing cold weather needs to stop! This week, while commiserating with the lovely Lauren at Fiola (601 Pennsylvania Ave., NW), she concocted a mystery cocktail with some of my favorite ingredients (gin, rosemary, citrus). The perfect combination of sweet and tart, spicy and creamy, this cocktail transported me to a budding May day. Now, if only the weather would follow suit!

Downtown – Joe’s Stone Crab opens to the public for dinner on Friday, January 31, at 750 15th St NW (the corner of 15th and H St NW). Penn Quarter – The Market in the ground floor of MenuMBK opened at 405 8th St NW. We checked it out Saturday and Sunday and think it has promise. Will it become Penn Quarter’s long lost bodega? [Penn Quarter Living] & [Nick Owens Tweet] & [Brightest Young Things] & [WTOP radio bit]
Penn Quarter – The Red Apron restaurant under construction in the 700 block of D St NW will no longer be called Parts & Labor; it will be called The Partisan. [Washington CityPaper]
Crib of the Week (CotW)
Our CotW this week is view-a-licious. It’s a high level unit at The Clara Barton (616 E Street NW) listed at $819K sporting 2 bedrooms, 2 baths, and a balcony with delightful north and west views overlooking the intersection of 7th and E Streets. We’ve visited a unit with this floor plan and it is nicely sized for both city entertaining and city living. The condo fee is $850 per month. We can write all we want but we’ll let the photos in the virtual tour (last link) do the talking (again). Love it. [Redfin listing – 616 E St NW – Unit 1118 – MLS DC8258901] & [MRIS Photo Tour]
Funny Photo Describes It: Brrrrr

The funny photo above of a car parked in the 1100 block of E Street NW in front of the Hotel Harrington and ‘Brrrrr’ inscribed in snow on it describes how we’re feeling in Penn Quarter today…cold. This photo was taken during the recent snowfall and the Capital Weather Gang put it best this morning with the headline ‘Arctic returns today, with little thawing over coming days’. Stay warm!
