MenuMBK Neighborhood Store Meet & Greet – Wed, Feb 12 @ 5:30 pm
By way of the Penn Quarter Neighborhood Association (monthly breakfast meeting list), we learned about MenuMBK’s (405 8th St NW) neighborhood Meet & Greet this Wednesday evening from 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm. We visited MenuMBK’s ground floor Market shortly after it opened and really like the overall concept. The BistroBar we’ve yet to visit so we’ll see everyone on Wednesday evening!
When you RSVP for attendance per the directions below, please indicate that you heard about this event via Penn Quarter Living.

Downtown DC Closure Report: Muse Nightclub, Tuscana West, Elisir, Freshii, And More
Writing about openings is far more fun than writing about closings but the shuttering of a business is part of its lifecycle. We have a few closings to mention with Muse Nightclub and Osteria Elisir being the biggest ones. Let’s get started with the list and what we know:
1) Muse Nightclub (717 6th St NW) – This address has been a nightclub or bar for a LONG time and the latest incarnation, Muse, quietly closed its operation in late January. This linked article provided by a Penn Quarter Living reader provides most of the history behind this address and the confirmation that Muse is closed, but we can also add that after the MCI (now Verizon) Center opened in 1997 and before 2005 this building was home to The Rock, a multilevel sports bar. The club’s website is no longer in operation either. The web page to market the property to another prospective tenant is already up. Photo sans Muse signage is shown below.
2) Tuscana West (1350 I St NW) – This I Street Italian restaurant across from Franklin Park held its last night of service this last Wednesday after a twenty (20) year run. It opened in 1993 and was one of the survivors from before downtown’s development resurgence. We did enjoy dining here and are sad to see it go. The same owner runs the recently opened Catch 15 restaurant/oyster bar on K Street…we’ll definitely be stopping by for oysters.
Art on Foot: Metro Center
While begrudging yet another weekend of Red Line delays, slight surprise and curiosity struck upon noticing this art installation in Metro Center (607 13th St., NW). In trying to find out more, it looks like there are several Metro stops with art installations. Sometimes you just need to look UP!
Fireplace Bars/Restaurants In Downtown DC/Penn Quarter
If you are looking for a fireplace bar or restaurant, then Penn Quarter and downtown DC is the right place for you. We’re huge fans of the warmth of an open fire while sipping a drink and Zagat recently posted on new fireplaces to check out. Three of the mentions are downtown: NoPa, Bar 515, and Catch 15. DCist also has their own fireplace list of the ten best fireplace bars/restaurants and in our neighborhood Poste makes this list for its outdoor fire pits.
We are torn between Poste (Hotel Monaco) and Bar 515 (the basement bar below the J&G Steakhouse in the W Hotel) as each has its niceties but Bar 515 is truly all year round because it is indoors. Bar 515 also has the 515 Society which is a nice way to get a few extras when dining there or at the J&G Steakhouse. We have to give Bar 515 a slight edge for these two reasons.
(We’ll also note that a few Penn Quarter/downtown condo buildings have gas fireplaces in their units, the two we can think of are the Cosmopolitan (715 6th St NW) and the Lafayette (631 D St NW).)
