Events/News
Downtown – The first permit we’ve seen for CityCenter gets filed and the address is 800 10th St NW – Unit 208. Is at a Tumi store? Might be! We’ll have to wait to find out! [Washington Business Journal (4th from bottom of list)]
Mount Vernon Triangle – 12 Volt Electronics (300 block of H St NW) gets busted for selling stolen goods. [The Triangle]
National Mall – The National Museum of (insert your noun of choice here) museums might not be open but the Mall flood control levee project is moving forward. It’s hard to believe but Penn Quarter is right next to a 100 year flood zone and a removable levee is all that stands between a swollen Potomac River and a few of the Penn Quarter residential buildings. [WaPo]
Development
Mount Vernon Triangle – Bozzuto pull N.V. Commercial in to share the cost of building 460 New York Avenue, one of the few new condo projects on the drawing board in the area. [Washington Business Journal]
Downtown – The 3rd Church of Christ Scientist, a Brutalist architecture styled building at 16th and I St NW, gets a raze permit. Lots of debate went into whether or not the structure was worth deeming historic and saving. [Washington Business Journal] & [Washington City Paper]
Shaw – A cool mural of Liz Taylor is revealed at 7th and Q St NW. You really have see it in person to get the full effect. [Bad Wolf (Shaw neighborhood blog)]
Restaurants
Downtown/Penn Quarter – Tom Seitsema releases his 2013 fall dining guide. Some of the usual suspects in the neighborhood are on the list along with a few newcomers. The digital version gets the Post’s cool new online layout special treatment. (Our two new favs on the list are Daikaya and Casa Luca for 2013.) [WaPo]
Penn Quarter – Amorini Panini (906 F St NW), the shop making tasty sandwiches on F St NW, developed a franchise model that is now available for purchase. [Amorini Panini franchise info]
Chinatown – Local beers such as DC Brau (and other craft beers) are now available at the Verizon Center. Nice! [WaPo]
Crib of the Week
Our Crib of the Week is in the 400 Mass Ave condo at 400 Massachusetts Ave NW (Unit 1201) featuring 1 bedroom and 1 bathroom. It’s 920 square feet in size, has a balcony, and includes 1 garage parking spot. Why do we like it? It’s high in the sky so you get lots of southern light and the building has lots of amenities like a pool, roof deck, and party room. It’s MLS DC8195701, the asking price is $475,000, and the condo fee is $475 per month. [Redfin listing – 400 Massachusetts Ave NW, #1201 – MLS DC8195701]
Burgundy & Gold
A few weeks ago we noted that the building on the corner of 10th & F that houses Honest Abe’s Souvenirs & Game Day Sports Shop (1000 F ST NW) had received a face-lift with a nice new coat of red paint. While that was true, what we failed to notice at the time was the gold trim, which was partially visible then, and has since that time been added to more surfaces.
After seeing just how much gold trim there was to the burgundy brick painting, we thought perhaps Game Day Sports Shop was gearing up for Redskins football, until we saw this:
Do the colors of that Big Bus look familiar? They did to us too, and we have to assume that even though the Big Bus website has the headquarters in Hayttsville, MD, for the customers the HQ might as well be right here in PQ.
Azur To Transform To Menu
Last week, we walked by Azur (405 8th St NW) and noticed it was all papered up. According to a press release issued by the Chef/Owner, Frederick de Pue, Azur, which opened just 6 months ago in the former Cafe Atlantico building, was not a good fit for the large space and he has decided to launch a new concept called Menu. Menu will offer the neighborhood it’s very first boutique grocery on the ground floor featuring local produce and specialty items, as well as bar and dining options upstairs. The space will be undergoing a renovation and Menu is scheduled to open in January 2014.
Bo-Dogs (614 E St NW) Grand Opening Today At Noon In Penn Quarter
Bo-Dogs (614 E St NW) plans to hold its grand opening today from Noon to 2 pm as seen by the signage out on the 600 block of E St NW last evening (click on photo below to zoom in). The signage also reports free food for the two hour time window. The brown paper is off the windows and staff were seen last night preparing the cafe. Last week we reported on the impending opening of Bo-Dogs that would fill the space formerly occupied by the Potato Valley Cafe.
The menu sports Kosher Hot Dogs ($4), Potato Knishes ($3), Corn on the Cob ($3), 24 ounce fountain soda ($2), and Poland Spring bottled water ($1). If you try it out today, let us know how it tasted.
