900 G Street
While walking to a meeting last week, we noticed that demolition has begun on the former YWCA building. The new development at 900 G Street from MRP Realty promises ” a new 9-story trophy office building scheduled to deliver by October 1, 2014. The Building will be developed to LEED Gold standard,” and the first floor is expected to offer new retail space. We await announcements of the expected new additions to the already strong neighborhood shopping.
Ford’s Theatre Penn Quarter Resident Discount – Hello Dolly! (and beyond)
Ford’s Theatre (514 10th Street NW) wrote in to let us know about a resident discount and their latest show, Hello Dolly!.
Penn Quarter residents get 20% off theatre performances using a special promo code (you do need to show proof of residence when you arrive at the theatre).
The current show running is one of our favorite musicals, Hello Dolly!, which is about a cantankerous half-a-millionaire Horace Vandergelder who hires matchmaker Dolly Levi to find him a wife. Dolly soon hatches a plan to woo and win Vandergelder’s hand herself, while simultaneously arranging romantic prospects for his niece, his clerks and two of Manhattan’s most eligible shop girls. The show runs through May 18 and you can find a more detailed synopsis here.
There are benefits to living downtown! Here are the details from the e-mail:

Penn Quarter Restaurant Recipe of the Week – We’re pointing out the recipe to Fiola’s Piadina (601 Pennsylvania Ave NW), a flatbread with prosciutto and cheese. The recipe includes how to make the dough…delizioso! [Fiola Piadina recipe [PDF]] & [Fiola Restaurant recipe page]
Chinatown – A wine bar and restaurant called Flight is planned for 777 6th St NW. With Daikaya and Graffiato online, the 6th Street corridor continues to fill out. [PQ Living tweet with liquor license app] & [Washington CityPaper]
Chinatown – Speaking of 6th Street, Daikaya (705 6th St NW) opens its upstairs izakaya (literal translation: “stay sake shop”). It looks very cozy and appealing to us. [Eater DC] & [Kampai – izakaya definition] & [Huff Post Taste – another take on izakaya]
Penn Quarter – Somebody robbed the Chevy Chase Bank in Market Square (701 Pennsylvania Ave NW). That’s no good. [CBS Local News]

Penn Quarter Crib of the Week – Nothing remarkable to note that we haven’t noted before, unfortunately. For sale inventory is very low.
Truth In Advertising
We thought this sign outside of Penn Social (801 E ST NW) fit today perfectly. It is a nice day outside for the first time in forever, but we’re jealous of those who have the day off and get to enjoy some of it inside Penn Social. While the initial press over the switch from Riot Act to Penn Social wasn’t entirely favorable, over the winter this became one of our favorite sports bars in Penn Quarter. The ground level portion of Penn Social is nothing special and we had written the place off after a few visits. But Mrs Columbo was insistent on playing skeeball one day and that was when we first took in the underground portion of the bar.
Talk about entering another world, the underground space is cavernous with numerous games. Drinking games? Check. Arcade games? Check. Board games? Check, we think. Definitely if you count the giant Connect-Four and Jenga pieces. As you’d expect there are lots of big screen and projection TVs, a reasonable beer selection (with rotating micro-brews) that includes pitchers, and an overall feel-good vibe.
PQ now has three fun, game filled, gigantic basement sports bars (Rocket Bar, Iron Horse, and Penn Social) . We’ve enjoyed them all for different reasons (and during different seasons), but Penn Social is definitely our new favorite.
