Foodie Radar: Lunch at Fiola
I’ve recently been enjoying a regular lunch date with a friend at the bar at Fiola (601 Pennsylvania Ave., NW). The full menu is available, but there are also two well-priced, robust lunch menus available:
Maria’s Light Lunch – 3 courses for $28
The Power Lunch – 3 courses for $34
I am particularly partial to the Tuna Carpaccio, Prosciutto and Figs, and the Tortellini. If it’s a Friday and I don’t have to get back to work, the Spritzer (Aperol, Prosecco and Club Soda) is a refreshing addition.
Don’t Forget To Vote!
Today’s the day to vote in our national and local elections, and even though D.C. is not a swing region (technically, we can’t call it a state) your vote does matter. Even though Penn Quarter is now all in Ward 2 [PDF map], there are two different polling places where you vote depending on where you live in the neighobrhood along the old Ward 2/Ward 6 boundaries [PDF map]:
Precinct 129: Martin Luther King Library, 901 G St NW
Precinct 143: Chinese Community Church, Chinese Community Church, 500 I St NW
To find your voting location, use this handy locator page from the DC Board of Elections and Ethics. We’ll see you at the polls!
Againn Gastropub (1099 New York Ave NW) Closing
Againn gastropub has posted on their website, Twitter, and Facebook pages that they are closed/closing. Their Opentable account is temporarily offline and attempts to call the restaurant located on 11th St NW between NY Ave and K St today have been unsuccessful. Eater DC and Washingtonian corroborate the news.
We went to Againn twice at a well spaced interval (months) and although we didn’t find the food objectionable, we were not inclined to return due to the pricing given the quantity of food served. We did like the private scotch locker idea though as it gave the restaurant a unique angle that reminds us of the private humidors one can rent at Shelley’s Back Room on F St NW. The scotch list was pretty fantastic too so Againn went on the “place to have drinks” list but not the “place to eat” list for us.

Hurricane Sandy preempted the Monday Heard In The ‘Hood so we’re doing the wrap up today. TGIF!
Here’s what we were reading recently about neighborhood news in DC. Have something to add? Leave it in the comments!

Penn Quarter – Meat(Balls) is out and Taylor Gourmet sub sandwich shop is in at 624 E St NW. [Washington CityPaper]
Penn Quarter – Red Apron Butchery going in at 709 D St NW will be both a butchery and a restaurant. This is similar to the Blacksalt idea in Palisades which is both a fishmonger and a restaurant (and a darn good one too!) [Prince of Petworth]
Penn Quarter – More Minibar (855 E St NW) clips including interior renderings. It will have a fireplace which we think is kinda’ cool. The price…that’s another story. [Eater DC – Sneak Preview] & [Eater DC – 5 Changes to Minibar]
Penn Quarter – A new business will occupy one of the kiosks in Gallery Place alley (7th and G St NW) offering pizza by the slice. Hope it doesn’t stay open all hours or it will become our area’s version of Adams Morgan’s Jumbo Slice. [Prince of Petworth]
Mount Vernon Triangle – Speaking of pizza, Wiseguys New York Pizza will be opening at 300 Massachusetts Ave NW in the Mass Court building at 4th St, H St, and Massachusetts Ave NW. This space has been vacant as long as we can remember so it’s nice to see it get filled. It used to be there was nowhere to get pizza by the slice. Wiseguys makes three places to get slices…may the best pizza win! [The Triangle]
