Saying A Big Downtown DC Thanks To America’s Veterans
Not to be forgotten are those who put themselves in harm’s way to protect the security of the United States and our freedoms. We thought we’d point out a few events offering a way to say thanks to our veterans for Veterans Day. The Federal holiday for Veterans day is next Monday, November 12 but these events are today and Sunday.
1) AT & T Store, Downtown (a little bit outside our Penn Quarter coverage area but close by off K Street near Farragut North)
Today, Friday, November 9 – 10 am to 2 pm
AT&T will host a special event open to the public to record video messages for veterans, just in time for the Veterans Day holiday. Messages will be uploaded to an AT&T YouTube Channel devoted to relaying messages to veterans.
WHERE: AT&T’s company-owned retail store at 1050 Connecticut Ave NW (cross street is L St NW)
WHAT: Using the latest smartphone and tablet video capabilities, AT&T is connecting friends and families across the world to share a special moment – veterans and active duty military personnel across the world will wake up on November 12 to a message from a loved one or someone from their community.
AT&T will also be hosting a phone drive for Cell Phones for Soldiers, a non-profit dedicated to providing deployed and returning troops with cost-free methods to communicate while serving in the military. Visitors to the Video-A-Thon can bring their used cellphones to special drop off bins that will be located in the store.
2) Navy Memorial, Penn Quarter
Sunday, November 11 – 1 pm to 2 pm
The U.S. Navy Ceremonial Guard will be in attendance for the wreath laying ceremony commemorating Veterans Day on Monday, Nov. 12th at 13:00 (1 pm). The event listing is here.
3) Local Business VETCorps Landscaping and Tel’Veh Café and Wine Bar, Mount Vernon Triangle
Sunday, November 11 – 6 pm to 10 pm
Local Business VETCorps Landscaping, an all veteran employer, and Tel’Veh Café and Wine Bar (one of our top three “go tos” for wine in the area) at 401 Massachusetts Ave NW are teaming up on Sunday, November 11 from 6 pm to 10 pm to host a happy hour that benefits Wounded Warriors. Bring anything from the donation suggestion list for admission to be distributed by the American Red Cross Station located at Walter Reed Hospital. Details on this event can be found here.
