History on Foot: Samuel F.B. Morse
Have you ever noticed the plaque on the Hotel Monaco (7th Street, between E and F Streets) about Samuel F.B. Morse? In 1845, Samuel F.B. Morse opened and operated the first public telegraph office on that very site. While most people know Morse for his association with the invention of the telegraph and, or course, the Morse Code, he was also an incredibly accomplished painter. For any of you who have read “The Greater Journey: Americans in Paris,” he is one of the figures David McCullough discusses. One of Morse’s most ambitious works, “Gallery of the Louvre,” was recently on special exhibit at the National Gallery of Art (6th and Constitution Ave. NW).

Penn Quarter – In department store lore, Kann’s, stood at 8th St and Market Space NW where Market Square now stands across from the Archives (then Center Market). A Washington department store from 1893 to 1975, it proclaimed itself “The Busy Corner. ” Check this story for some great history, old photos, and insight into this story from Washington’s retail past. All Over DC – We’ve seen our share of younger folks in wheelchairs in Penn Quarter and up at the CityVista Safeway and have known that some percentage of them are due to spinal cord injuries from shootings and other violence. Our town’s main daily provides good local reporting on the backstory behind what we’ve seen in person…we’ve always wondered the whats, whys, and hows. [WaPo]
Penn Quarter/Chinatown – Capitol Hemp, formerly at 519 H St NW, closes all its stores. [WaPo]
Shaw – An inside look at Wagtime on 9th St NW in Shaw where many Penn Quarter residents take their pooches for doggie daycare. [WaPo]
