Street Sense Spotlighted Helping Downtown’s Homeless On Local TV
We’ve been buying Street Sense, a street paper focusing on DC’s homeless issues, since we moved downtown as it’s a way to positively contribute to helping homeless who sell the paper to earn money. The non-profit is headquartered right here in downtown DC on G St NW between 13th and 14th St NW and Channel 9 recently aired a great segment spotlighting the organization.
The organization’s mission statement partly reads as follows:
Street Sense is a Washington, D.C.-based 16-page biweekly street newspaper that was founded in 2003. Its mission is to offer economic opportunities for people experiencing homelessness in our community through a newspaper that elevates voices and encourages debate on poverty and injustice.
It may be easy to get caught up in all the fabulous new business opening announcements, the Shake Shake being yesterday’s most recent example, but we are always reminded that there are great organizations doing work in downtown DC with a more altruistic mission helping those in need.
Restaurant Week Begins In One Week

Restaurant Week starts August 13, next week, and it’s the twice yearly event we’ve come to look forward to here in Penn Quarter. The Restaurant Association of Metropolitan Washington’s (RAMW) restaurants come together to offer multi-course $20 lunches and $35 dinners so that patrons can try a full dining experience without breaking the bank or spending what typically might be spent for an evening out.
The specials typically run for one week from August 13 to August 19 but some restaurants extend their deals for a longer period of time. Graffiato, Art and Soul, and Adour in the St. Regis Hotel let us know that they’ll be extending their specials in some fashion for another week. Check the restaurant’s website or call for more details as some restaurants extend one meal only, both meals, or they offer other specials.
Are there any favorite restaurants you’re looking to try during Restaurant Week?
Real Estate Corner: CityCenter DC Condo Floorplans Available
Above: CityCenter DC (now – August 2012)
It’s amazing to see a $700+ million real estate development project covering 10 acres grow up before your very eyes which is exactly what CityCenter DC is doing downtown (9th to 11th St NW and H St to New York Ave NW). Of great interest is the 9th and H St NW corner shown above which will showcase one of two residential condo buildings comprising 216 units. The official name is The Residences at CityCenter and this last week the floorplans were made available on their official website. The variety includes one, two, and three bedroom homes with the ones starting in the $400K range and the twos starting in the $700K range. Square footage ranges from 689 square feet to 2,676 square feet. The planned interior buildout is shown in great detail and sports a modern European aesthetic.

The amenities and services look fantastic and include the following: concierge, 24-hour security, parking, key fob access, storage, fitness center, yoga studio, two roof parks, outdoor kitchens, outdoor dining room, outdoor fire pit, lounge, wine storage, bar lounge, dining room, catering kitchen, executive board room, guest suite, spa treatment room, and a landscaped terrace. These are amenities that could get lots of use from an active downtown community of residents. There are some great design features and we really like the roof top dining idea. There is a water feature but noticeably absent is a swimming pool which we do enjoy in our downtown condo.
The project is supposed to deliver in 2013 and we’re glad to see that it will add to the “living” part of downtown DC.
J.Crew (950 F St NW) Opening Today In Penn Quarter
The next clothing retailer coming to Penn Quarter and downtown DC, J.Crew, will open their doors to the public today at 950 F St NW per a J.Crew representative. We called the store to verify that they are indeed opening today. The store will carry the best of J.Crew’s women’s and men’s collections with the retail space comes in at 8,625 square feet (3,044 square feet on the ground floor and 5,581 square feet on the lower level). This is yet another clothing retailer that has helped repopulate storefronts in downtown DC and Penn Quarter along F Street NW over the last number of years.
The opening promotion is that with a $250 or more spend, women’s customers will receive a Timex watch and men’s customers will receive a long stemmed wooden Men’s Shop umbrella (all while supplies last).
Welcome to the neighborhood, J.Crew!
