Here’s what we were reading recently about neighborhood news in DC. Have something to add? Leave it in the comments!
Downtown – A new restaurant titled appropriately enough, The Federalist, showed up at The Madison Hotel (1177 15th St NW). The menu is inspired by 18th century American food and executed through local producers and purveyors. You don’t have to read any Papers except the menu so you can order. Downtown/Penn Quarter – We’re no strangers to the fast food scene and will miss the BK on K St but Fuel Pizza looks like an upgrade to us. Progress towards opening is noted there and at the PQ location at 6th and F St NW in the old OBA bank building. [Prince of Petworth] & [WaBizJo]
All Over DC – A list of the 10 restaurants in DC that opened this year generating the most “buzz.” Four of the ten are in our neighborhood. [Zagat]
Downtown – A gallery of super photos showing CityCenter construction progress. They’re zipping along! [DC MUD (Metro Urban Diary]
Downtown – Speaking of CityCenter, will Eataly, New York’s Mario Batali’s mega-Italian themed restaurant, show up at CityCenter? Maybe… [WaPo]
Penn Quarter – The first review for Elisir on 11th St NW comes in from our city’s largest daily. [WaPo]
Penn Quarter – Our work colleagues who live in Virginia and Maryland all rave and gloat about going to Costco or BJ’s Wholesale when the “Where do you live?” question comes up. The gloating can now end as a Costco is coming to DC and it won’t be that far from downtown (about 4 1/2 miles away) off New York Ave NE. [DC MUD (Metro Urban Diary)]
Penn Quarter – Funxion on F St NW (between 13th and 14th) closed and may be replaced by…District Taco. [Prince of Petworth]
Downtown – The Hamilton at 14th and F St NW opened yesterday afternoon and the menus are posted. [The Hamilton – menus]
Penn Quarter Parents…Sharing Nannies
We’re a big believer in the urban family concept and know that many couples in our Penn Quarter (PQ) buildings have kids. We’ve written before about PQ babies, the PQ Parents Google newsgroup, and the effort to bring a playground to greater downtown. This Penn Quarter/Downtown nanny share request on a DC Urban Moms & Dads forum caught our attention and we wanted to put it out there as a reminder that Penn Quarter isn’t just for singles. Here’s the situation:
1. Share for 20-30 hours for 3 days a week flexible)
2. We are down to choosing between two experienced nanny’s w/ great references (happy to introduce you to them)
3. Both nanny’s are legal and would be paid $10-$11 per hour by each family
4. Our child is a 3 month old; looking for one other child
5. looking to start in mid-January
6. open to hosting or open to you hosting
and a further update…
we’ve settled on 3 days (8 hours a day, for a total of 24 hours a week).
Still looking for a share partner.
Open to hosting (we live in Penn Quarter) or going to you, if you are in Penn Quarter or near the Dupont Foggy Bottom area.
Do you have tips on sharing nannies in Penn Quarter and/or DC?
Prices So Low They’re Insane
BooksPlus, the small bookstore located inside the MLK downtown branch, is closing at the end of the year. We’ve purchased a number of books from this little kiosk over the years and we’re a little saddened to see it close. Heck we still sip coffee from a DC Public Library coffee mug we purchased here years ago. But it was no doubt a loss-leader, hard to make a buck selling books when your literally giving them (well borrowing) away for free as well. Speaking of bucks, through the end of the year all books at the BookPlus bookstore are discounted to $1. The closing is part of the renovations coming to the first floor of the library.
The public library is also in the early stages (began on December 5th) of their fine forgiveness campaign. Need to return that copy of Tropic of Cancer you’ve had since high school? Now is your chance to do so and to have the fee waived. No matter how overdue or the condition of the returned item, the library will waive all fees no questions asked. The library is hoping to encourage patrons to come back and use their services who may have stayed away for fear of overdue fines. Even if you have lost the item you borrowed, you can come into the library and have your account cleared by speaking with a clerk as the circulation desk. It doesn’t get any easier than that, you have until February 5th to take advantage of this generous offer.
PQ Holiday Shopping 2
A few holiday gift ideas that can be purchased in Penn Quarter for the travelers you know:
The latest cameras or photo gadgets at Penn Camera (840 E St, NW) I’ve got my eye on the Canon Powershot SD780 IS – small and compact with HD photo and video – and the Gorillapod tripod.
A globetrotter pouf at Urban Outfitters (737 7th St, NW).
An aromatherapy massage at the Aveda Institut (713 7th St, NW)
New luggage from Macy’s (1201 G St, NW). I’m a huge fan of Diane von Furstenberg‘s line of weekenders and rollerbags.
A pair of comfortable shoes or boots from Comfort One Shoes (716 7th St, NW).
A vintage map or beautiful photograph of their favorite destination from the Holiday Market.
