Here’s what we were reading recently about neighborhood news in DC. Have something to add? Leave it in the comments!
Downtown – The National Christmas Tree Lighting takes place this Thursday, December 1. Mark your calendars and remember that traffic is always totally chaotic downtown that evening. The event even has its own website! [National Tree website] & [DC Event Junkie]
Penn Quarter – Did you know that Cube Libre (corner of 9th and H St NW) has salsa dancing late on weekend nights? Maybe the neighborhood will be gaining another spot to see live music… [WaPo]
Penn Quarter – Paul Bakery gets the judging treatment from a local website. We’ve been a number of times now that it’s been open a number of months and certainly enjoy the outdoor seating during the nice weather. The food works but hasn’t blown us away. They’ve also opened a store in Georgetown next to the Georgetown Park Mall entrance on Wisconsin Avenue. [Prince of Petworth]
Downtown/Penn Quarter – CityEats, an online restaurant reservation service, launches in DC competing in the same space dominated by OpenTable. A number of neighborhood restaurants have signed on including Graffiato, Social Reform (The Caucus Room), Acadiana, Asia Nine, Hill Country, Matchbox, and others. [CityEats restaurant list] & [CityEats homepage]
National Mall – The National Capital Planning Commission (NCPC) approved preliminary site and building plans, final site utility plans, and final support of excavation and dewatering plans for the National Museum of African American History and Culture. This is one of the last sites available on the National Mall for building and museum construction. [National Capital Planning Commission (second item)]
Shaw – A nice retrospective from our neighbors to the north on the changes to the Shaw area over the last five years. We wish RenewShaw another great year of running their website and informative blog. [RenewShaw]
Happy Black Friday!

Various financial news outlets are reporting that this year’s Black Friday is seeing more consumer activity than last year. The sidewalks of Penn Quarter’s show some healthy retail activity as well (photo).

Here’s what we were reading recently about neighborhood news in DC. Have something to add? Leave it in the comments!
Penn Quarter – A very interesting editorial appears in this Sunday’s Washington Post about the FBI headquarters building echoing what we’ve been suggesting for some time. The FBI deserves a new, consolidated headquarters more suited to their mission and the neighborhood where they reside. This is not likely to be in downtown DC. [WaPo]
Mount Vernon Triangle – A great piece pointing out the changes to our closest and sometimes dysfunctional grocery store, the CityVista Safeway. The product placements have been rerigged and the beer/wine aisles were finally expanded and sized appropriately. We’ve noticed the positive changes and like the direction. You can air your views at this link! [The Triangle]
Penn Quarter – More interesting bits on the Meatballs restaurant (624-A E St NW) regarding the venture’s ownership. Kudos to the CityPaper for some good gumshoeing and local reporting. [Washington CityPaper]
Penn Quarter – We’ve been following the saga of the DC Central Library, the MLK Library, for some time. The Urban Land Institute comes up with its recommendations for the MLK Library at 9th and G St NW after interviewing a series of community stakeholders about their views of the Mies van der Rohe designed edifice and its community use. [WaPo] & [Washington CityPaper] & [Urban Land Institute MLK Library panel recommendations]
Downtown – The Old Post Office Pavilion (Pennsylvania Ave, between 11th and 12th St NW) redevelopment RFP decision has been pushed off by the GSA until early 2012. [WaPo]
Penn Quarter – The Downtown Holiday Market announces its run dates, December 2 to 23, on F St NW. [Downtown Holiday Market]
Penn Quarter – It looks like foodies will have another PQ restaurant to check out in December. Elisir plans to open for lunch on December 1 and dinner on December 3 at 427 11th St NW. [WaPo]
