Meatballs Arriving In Penn Quarter (624/626 E St NW)
Photo: Exterior of Meatballs at night
There was lots of hubbub this week as it became very apparent that Meatballs, a Michel Richard meatball oriented restaurant, is opening soon at 624/626 E Street NW sandwiched between the Starbucks and Luke’s Lobster. Richard is well known for being the force behind the restaurants Citronelle and Central and we understand that Meatballs may open as soon as next week.
The most comprehensive story we saw is from the Huffington Post which describes the different types of meatballs to be served, the accompanying sauces, and the size (1,000 square feet – seating for 40) of the venue. Interesting points include citations that a ventless fryer will be used, the fried tater tots served at Citronelle will be available, the fried chicken served by Central will also be available, and application has been made for a liquor license.
Thanks go out to a few PQ Living readers who alerted us to the fact that this restaurant was under construction in the months leading up to this week. What we didn’t know was that a large vertical blade and bright pink neon sign affecting sightlines would be attached to the exterior of the building which only became apparent this week.
Other primary sources include stories from Prince of Petworth and Eater.com. A few interior photos follow the break…
National Food Day
October 24 is now National Food Day. According to the organizers, Food Day “seeks to bring together Americans from all walks of life—parents, teachers, and students; health professionals, community organizers, and local officials; chefs, school lunch providers, and eaters of all stripes—to push for healthy, affordable food produced in a sustainable, humane way.”

Occupy PQ
The Occupy movement that began in NYC and has since cropped up all over the world is a true testament to democracy. People who see something wrong in their part of the world and want to do something about it. But like any good democracy, things get messy and confused, and the message can become muddled. Our read of the original protesters in NYC was that they were angry at a Wall Street they see as being saved by taxpayer dollars, but not giving enough back to help those out of work. It wasn’t long, however, before the message was about a lot of the problems in the US. But the diverse views that have been brought to the protests haven’t caused any less news coverage, which made us decide maybe it was time for an Occupy PQ movement to take on some of our (significantly less serious and important) issues.
We propose the following as the start of our list of demands:
-
Institutue reasonable hours durring which garbage trucks, construction, bucket drummers, and other noise makers can operate. The free-for-all currently in place is not the way to maintain the neighborhood going forward;
-
Set a ceiling on the number of frozen yogurt and/or cupcake stores allowed in a square block;
-
Grant DC Meter Maids the authority to write tickets to idling tourist busses;
-
Triple the number of PQ Meter Maids;
-
If Federal Agencies won’t remove their jersey barriers, at least make sure they’re draining properly in an effort to cut back on the fastest growing population in PQ, mosquitos.
That’s our initial list of demands, but there must be more small changes you’d like to see to make our great neighborhood even better.

Here’s what we were reading recently about neighborhood news in DC. Have something to add? Leave it in the comments!
Penn Quarter – We talked to a few of the workers loading equipment into the former Potato Valley Cafe (614 E St NW). The potato cafe is closed and will be replaced by a New York style pizza and sandwich shop. No word on an opening day. [PQL Intelligence Network]
Chinatown – Will the Verizon Center have additional static signs and be lit up with digital signs just like the corner of 7th and H St NW? A bill before the city council makes that proposal. [Washington Business Journal]
Downtown – We have a new opening date for Enzo Fargione’s Elisir on 11th St NW. It expects to open in November and the tasting menu’s price has now dropped below a Benny. [Washington Post]
14th St NW – Pulp, the quirky and fun gift store on 14th St NW in mid-city, will remain open as a local buyer has been found for the business. [Borderstan]
Shaw – Cambria Suites will be the hotelier in the CityMarket at O project. [Renew Shaw]
