Never Get Lost In Penn Quarter Again..

Earlier this month, BBC News published an article titled Six ways to never get lost in a city again.
While reading the six tips, we found that the majority of them were not very useful in our Washington, DC neighborhood of Penn Quarter. So, why not create our own list? Here it is, but please contribute your ideas in the comments section, too!
- Every DC resident knows about the L’Enfant plan that gave us a nice grid system of lettered and numbered roads to work with. Just walk one block in any direction while observing street signs and you’ll know which direction you’re headed.
- Uphill or downhill? The numbered streets of DC slope downhill in the direction of the National Mall.
- Street sign block numbers; maybe this is a little more advanced for DC dwellers and probably the most useful. Underneath every street name is a set of numbers indicating the block number. On the west side of the intersection, the numbers go up and on the east side, the numbers go down.
- Catching a glimpse of the Washington Monument or Old Post Office tower. Generally, if you’re in Penn Quarter, these landmarks are better to use than trying to observe the direction of cloud movement as the BBC article suggests.
- Using the map & compass on your smart phone, typing in the name of your destination and getting instantaneous walking directions.
Something Different for Halloween

Last night, I attended the Drag Races in Dupont Circle to officially kick off the 2011 Halloween festivities. I’ve been looking around for something unique to do this year for Halloween? Oyamel (401 7th Street NW) invites us to join them for special drinks and eats to celebrate Day of the Dead through November 2 (including a special music performance by Rudy Gonzalez Y Su Locura).
While at the hardware store yesterday, I picked up a postcard for Bicycle Space (459 Eye Street NW). On October 27, they’ll be organizing the Cupcake Caper, a murder mystery bike ride through the city. Costumes and bike decorations encouraged. I don’t have a bike, but if I did, this sounds really cool.
Do you have any other ideas for things to do?
Have a spooktacular time!
Spotted: The Wagmobile
Once in a while we’ll post a picture of a cool car we spot in PQ on our Twitter feed. This time we’re getting a good kick out of seeing the (new?) Wagmobile from Wagtime (1232 9th St NW), a pet focused business in Shaw, show up on D Street NW to pick up a pet. The normal van we’re used to seeing is a minivan style vehicle with a blue and salmon color paint scheme that’s not as noticeable as this one which has a much more fun vibe; we give this paint scheme two paws up. This is not an ad and we receive no compensation for this post, but we know there are lots of pet owners in PQ who like to ensure good care for their pets.
How do you solve your pet grooming, boarding, and walking needs when you’re home or away?
