District Of Pi Pizzeria Now Open (910 F St NW)
We strolled by District of Pi today to confirm that the restaurant has indeed opened! The interior space is very nice and preserves many historical aspects of the original building. Be sure to explore the dining room towards the rear of the restaurant and you might be surprised to find yourself outside of the original building’s facade and in a two-story atrium. There is also a hint that space downstairs may be transformed into a lounge in the future.
Great cornmeal-crust pizza and original Schlafly beer are on the menu. The restaurant is open from 11am – 11pm Mon-Thurs, until midnight on Fri-Sat and until 10pm on Sundays. The address is 910 F St NW.
How Does Your Garden Grow?
I’ve recently been thinking a lot about gardening. Wouldn’t it be great to be able to make a salad from your own lettuces, herbs and tomatoes? Or add a sprig of fresh mint to your lemonade or cocktail? Or even to be able to go out and cut fresh flowers for the table any time you please?
Sadly, my balconies are in the shade and I haven’t had any luck growing anything useful. I’ve often seen little community gardens as I’ve walked or driven through the city. Have any of you ever participated in one? I did some research to see what is close by. There are actually quite a lot of community gardens around town, but nothing right here in the neighborhood.
Maybe we should try to establish one here. Let me know if you have any tips.

Here’s what we were reading recently about neighborhood news in DC. Have something to add? Leave it in the comments!
Mount Vernon Triangle – The Sixth Engine restaurant, encased in the 400 Mass Ave condo building, serving American bistro fare begins construction. Photos available at the second link. [The Triangle 1] & [The Triangle 2]
Georgetown – The M Street Barnes and Noble bookstore will be closing. Sad days as this is a great port in the storm to go to on M Street. We’re a bit surprised that a national book store would give up an anchor spot but those are the times. [Georgetown Metropolis] & [Washington CityPaper]
H Street NE – DC wants streetcars to be on H Street by 2013 and they have a plan. Or rather, they will have a plan. [WaPo]
Downtown – We Love DC lists out five eagerly waited restaurants. Elisir (11th St NW) and The Hamilton (14th St NW) are definitely on our list too. [We Love DC]
Penn Quarter – There was a stabbing at 7th and H St NW during a fight. [WaPo]
Downtown – Do we need dedicated playgrounds downtown? This is the ‘for’ argument. [Greater Greater Washington]
Penn Quarter – The DC Shorts film festival runs from September 8 to 18. Penn Quarter screening venues include the E Street Cinema and the US Navy Memorial. [DC Shorts]
Downtown – The Old Ebbitt Grille’s Oyster Riot site is running and local artist Matt Sesow does the artistic honors. It’s hard to believe this is the 17th run of this party! [Oyster Riot website]

Downtown DC/Penn Quarter’s Irene Aftermath
A toppled tree on 4th Street NW next to the GAO was the worst damage we saw while out this morning along with a few other visible signs that the perimeter of hurricane Irene blew through Penn Quarter and downtown last night. Other evidence of the storm included toppled newspaper boxes, a few young trees leaning against their wire restraints, a knocked over chain link fence, and debris on the street. Consistent with our experience living downtown through other storms, we didn’t experience any interruptions in power. If you have any photos of the storm’s damage to add, send them in to pqliving [at] gmail.com and we’ll post them. Check after the break for the full photo set. Have any impressions about the storm and how it was handled by the authorities?
