Manger à L’Extérieur
It’s hard to imagine now, but there will come a time when you’ll actually want to be outside once again. We were happy to see that when that time finally comes, we should have another spot to sit outside and enjoy a quick bite or (non alcoholic) drink.
Pret A Manger has had a notice up on its window for at least the last few weeks noting an application for an unenclosed sidewalk cafe. The hearing is scheduled for February 24th, and we can’t imagine any reason why this shouldn’t be the next outside spot in PQ.
Overall we’ve been happy with Pret, decent food and reasonable prices. We’re happy to see them expanding outside, but the real prize will be weather warm enough to showcase that seating.

Here’s what we were reading last week about neighborhood news in DC. Have neighborhood thoughts? Leave them in the comments!
Penn Quarter – Fiola, an Italian restaurant taking the former space held by Le Paradou at 678 Indiana Ave NW (but in the same building as the 601 Penn Ave condo) 601 Pennsylvania Ave NW, plans to open in April. A sure sign is a posting for job openings. We hope to know more precision soon. [Washington DC Jobz (sic)] & [Prince of Petworth] & [WaPo (older link for reference)] Hat tip: Cheryl
Penn Quarter – The Carpetbaggers is showing at Ford’s Theatre and one of our favorite sites offers up a review. [We Love DC]
Penn Quarter/Downtown – The annual Downtown Neighborhood Survey is up online and available to be taken. Please consider taking it as the neighborhood needs good economic and demographic data to continue improving our state of affairs. [Downtown DC Busines Improvement District]
Downtown – The Downtown Neighborhood Association (DNA) will hold its monthly meeting tomorrow, February 8 starting at 6:30 pm at the Calvary Baptist Church on 8th Street NW. Jack Evans, Ward 2 Councilmember, will be the lead speaker. Scroll to the end and look in the bottom left for more detail. [DC DNA Website]
Penn Quarter/Capitol Hill – The ANC6C full commission meeting is Wednesday, February 9 starting at 7 pm at the Heritage Foundation on Massachusetts Ave NW. Lots of good stuff on the agenda this month. [ANC 6C Website]
Happy Chinese New Year (Year of the Rabbit)!
Chinese New Year 2011
It’s that time of the year already! The Chinese New Year officially occurred on February 3rd, but DC’s celebration will be held on Sunday, Feb 6, 2011 and will be centered around the 7th & H St NW intersection (Gallery Place metro). The parade will take place from 2pm – 5pm and will feature a traditional Chinese Dragon Dance, Kung Fu demonstrations, and live musical entertainment. The usual giant firecracker lights up at 3:45pm.
More Penn Quarter and Chinatown restaurants are hosting specials during the celebration this time around. For example, Chinatown Coffee (475 H St NW) is serving The Crazy Rabbit cocktail and Buddha Bar (455 Mass Ave NW) is offering a special Chinese New Year menu.
Street closures, courtesy of the Penn Quarter Neighborhood Association, are as follows:
- 7th Street NW between I and G Streets NW
- G Street NW between 7th and 9th Streets NW
- 8th Street NW between G and H Street NW
- H Street NW between 8th and 6th Streets NW
Fuel Pizza To Score, King Burgers No More
Earlier this week, we were walking home from work along K Street NW eager for some flame broiled dinner at our favorite two story Burger King (1606 K St NW) only to discover that it was closed. We don’t mean not open…we mean no illuminated neon sign…no backlit menu…no sign of life (or the King)…and a vinyl “For Lease” sign flapping on the side of the building. There was no having it our way because there was no way to have it. We learned from the Washington Business Journal that Fuel Pizza will be opening a location in that space. What made the news more tasty is that Fuel will also bring its pies to a new location in the Penn Quarter at 600 F St NW. For those that walk by the building regularly, that’s the OBA Federal Bank building right on the corner of 6th and F St NW which has been empty for a while. Time to scratch another vacant property off the list.
