Savor 2011: Two Nights, Higher Cost
Savor, the craft beer event (that also features food) is returning to the Building Museum June 3rd & 4th. A second day has been added this year, the first time the event has been two days since the very first Savor four years ago. But tickets are $15 higher this year (good for one day or the other, not both) at $110 per person. Want to attend one of the classes (“salons”) too? That will run you an additional $30.
We’ve attended each of the three previous Savor events, but we’re not sure about this one. A combined $280 for the Columbo’s to attend one night of Savor plus class/salon is just a lot of money, no matter the economy. Still it’s hard to pass up the only major beer festival we know of in DC–and it is in our backyard.
If you’ve attended Savor in the past or are a member of the American Homebrewers Association or the Brewers Association you can buy your tickets on March 1st. The general public can purchase tickets on March 3rd. General public tickets sold out last year within the first hour.
Do you plan to attend this year?

Honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Today is the Federal holiday commemorating Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr’s birthday. In honor of Dr. King, we at PQ Living wanted to point out a few resources for readers we thought interesting to mark this holiday.
- Biography of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Winner of the 1964 Nobel Peace Prize [Nobel Prize website]
- Website for The King Center, Atlanta, Georgia
Established in 1968 by Coretta Scott King, The King Center is the official, living memorial dedicated to the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. [The King Center website]
- Descriptions of the Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. once said, “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is: ‘What are you doing for others?'” Each year, Americans across the country answer that question by coming together on the King Holiday to serve their neighbors and communities. [MLK Day Website]
To mark the 25th anniversary of the King Holiday, and to encourage ongoing service throughout the year, we are launching the MLK 25 Challenge – a call to all Americans to honor Dr. King by pledging to take at least 25 actions during 2011 to make a difference for others and strengthen our communities. Name That Metro Station
You may have heard that WMATA is considering selling naming rights for individual metro stations. We thought it might be fun to see what PQL readers can come up with for our three neighborhood stations: Gallery Place, Metro Center and Archives.
If the naming rights proposal becomes reality, we can expect the Gallery Place station to be a major point of interest. AT&T seemingly leased the large space at 7th & H St NW to compete with the Verizon Center on the other side of the block. And, Verizon Center is already announced by most WMATA train operators, like Gallery Place, Chinatown, Verizon Center. So, could an AT&T, Gallery Place, Chinatown, Verizon Center station be in our future?
An interesting bit of info from the Washington Examiner article is about New York’s experience with naming rights:
New York’s subway system has tried the same thing, agreeing in 2009 to add the Barclays bank name to a Brooklyn station for $4 million over 20 years.
How about a Lockheed Martin, Archives, Navy Memorial, Penn Quarter station? Or, since Facebook just moved into offices near Metro Center, a Facebook, Metro Center station?
