Tied To A Hitching Post
This probably isn’t what the property owners on 8th street had in mind when they recently installed new tree box fences from CVS down to the Lansburgh entrance. As dog owners we know this is a not-too-subtle way of saying “keep your dog out of the box.” Nonetheless, we applaud this particular move as it solves what was for us an occasional inconvenience: The single dog hitching post.
Prior to the installation of these tree boxes, there was only one good tree outside of CVS to tie your dog to when running errands. There are other trees (and a few other structures) nearby, but typically the other options were no good because of discarded food, garbage, or other items you wouldn’t want to leave your dog exposed to. If you walked by and another dog was tied to this tree, you were out of luck until the owner returned and left with their dog.
That problem (ok, it only happened to us once) is now solved. With this new fencing there are now plenty of safe places to hitch your poocha while you run into CVS. On the tree box directly in front of CVS alone you could tie up a whole gang of man’s best friends. And those big CVS windows looking out onto 8th street mean you can always keep an eye on things outside if you’re the worrying type.
The battle between dog owner and those who guard the tree boxes will no doubt continue on, but in this instance we think both parties win.

Weekend Fun: Arts On Foot, DC Shorts & A Dock Sale
There are two festivals going on in the Penn Quarter this weekend that we have to point out and one dock sale. Any way you slice it, it’s never a dull moment downtown.
First, is the Arts on Foot, an annual festival now in its 18th year that turns F Street in between 6th and 9th Streets NW into a celebration of the arts (Festival Map [PDF]). Art vendor booths line the street, multiple performance stages can be found, and restaurants will be offering their culinary delights for visitors to try. The art market is open today and tomorrow and the festival portion runs tomorrow.
Second, is the DC Shorts Film Festival, also an annual festival, that runs independently produced short films at both the E Street Cinema and the U.S. Navy Memorial Theatre. Tickets are available online and at the participating theaters at showtime (if not sold out). The festival runs September 9 to September 16.
Lastly, the urban equivalent of a garage sale, a dock sale, will be taking place tomorrow from 9 am to 2 pm at the Cosmopolitan Condominium at 715 6th St NW. Go around the building into the alley to the loading dock in the back for condo/apartment furnishings for sale with an emphasis on art, furniture, music, and electronics. Happy hunting!
Bench Seating Is About To Become More Popular
The AP (and other sources) are reporting that the National Mall is now providing free WiFi internet access. This joint effort by the DC Government, USDA (and other Federal Agencies), and Smithsonian provides hot spots between 3rd and 14th streets, NW. This sounds like a great service, even if we wish it had been implemented at the start of spring, not the end of summer.
We wonder if any of the PQ condos that are close to the mall can pick up this signal? Maybe the rooftop of the Newseum Condos?
