Amorini Panini Opens Next Monday! (9/27)
Amorini Panini’s facebook page has a daily countdown until their opening day, and that day will be next Monday (9/27)! The page also mentions that there may be some soft opening dates, but there are only 5 days left until the opening and no soft opening has been announced. We’ll send out a tweet if we become aware of a soft opening!
Filling out one of the last available storefronts on the 900 block of F St, Amorini Panini offers hand-crafted artisan bread baked fresh daily, the finest quality meats & cheeses, and Paninis that are grilled to perfection. Poised to become a go-to lunch spot for nearby office workers, Amorini Panini’s very close proximity to Penn Quarter residents (in the space directly above the panini shop), the International Spy Museum, Smithsonian American Art & Portrait Gallery, Verizon Center and the Marriot Hotel lends credibility to the idea that the panini shop will enjoy operating hours well into the evenings and weekends. However, location is not everything. As seen with the trendy McDonalds at 9th & E St NW that enjoys only mediocre business, a Penn Quarter food option needs to pair nicely with the nearby clientele. Amorini Panini’s menu features breakfast and lunch paninis, including the F Street Club and Penn Quarter Turkey, and also offers a half-soup, half-panini option, which has been a smashing success with competing national chains.
Welcome to the neighborhood!
Central Souvenirs
Reader C. sent in a tip that the old Central Liquors space (917 F ST NW) will become another souvenir shop. We stopped by and sure enough the windows are papered with Joe’s Souvenir Outlet. And of course there is a permit in the window which notes the use of space will be for a “retail clothing store” (the store address on the permit incorrectly states “NE” as the quadrant).
It looks like the Souvenir Row we talked about several weeks ago will not be contained to the 10th & F corner, now spreading down F street. But don’t think we’re against all of these stores. We head into the souvenir shop that took over the old B&K Newsstand location (1004 F ST NW) on a fairly regular basis. They sell our favorite Habanero hot sauce, DC RedBone (Home of the Anacostias!).
A Touch Of Fun On Pennsylvania Avenue
We never know what gems Penn Quarter Living readers will unearth every week in our downtown neighborhood. Joy, one of our regular readers, sent in photos of a diorama set up in an office window fronting Pennsylvania Ave NW wanting to know more; we knew this would be a Monday story. To the left of 601 Pennsylvania Ave’s entrance (the office building and not the condo) passers-by will encounter a back to school themed diorama on display to ring in the fall commemorating children returning to their scholastic endeavors. We understand that the dioramas change on a regular basis and applaud the creativity of this office worker for brightening up our neighborhood with this special touch. If readers have witnessed other scenes in this window display or know of other similar touches that make our neighborhood special, feel free to mention them in the comments. More pictures follow the break.
Is Gallery Place’s Mosquito Anti-Loitering Device Working?
On approximately August 30, 2010, the owners of the Gallery Place complex installed a Mosquito anti-loitering device under the canopy of the 7th & H St NW Metro station entrance. The device emits a high pitched pulsed tone that is supposed to only be heard by young ears. Those are the same young ears that the complex owner apparently wants to encourage to move along and go about their business.
Since the device was installed, a second device has been plugged into the contraption. We’re guessing that this is some sort of timer that activates the device during specific hours. As we strolled by the location yesterday, we were not able to hear the device, although this old blogger is normally able to hear such frequencies.
It has been about 2 weeks since the device was installed and, a few WaPo and TBD articles later, we wanted to check in with the residents and see how everyone feels about the device. Is it working? Whatever the word working means to you.
