Hong Kong Film Festival Starts Friday At Smithsonian
It’s not Hollywood. It’s not Bollywood. It’s another film center of the world, Hong Kong, that The Smithsonian Freer Gallery of Art and Arthur M. Sackler Gallery, hosts of the popular Asia After Dark series, celebrates with the 15th annual “Made in Hong Kong Film Festival” beginning Friday, June 18. Cosponsored by the Freer and Sackler Galleries and the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office (HKETO) the series runs on weekends from June into August.
This year, there will be eight films featured during the festival, led by John Woo’s epic “Red Cliff,” which has never been shown in commercial theaters in the U.S. The two-part, five-hour-long film depicts the Battle of Red Cliffs, one of the most famous events in Chinese history. The battle is also depicted in several artworks in the Freer and Sackler collections.
Each film is shown twice, once on a Friday night at 7 pm and then again on Sunday afternoon at 2 pm two days later. Films being shown follow:
Red Cliff – Part 1, Red Cliff – Part 2, Vengeance
Ip Man, Rule Number One, The Contract, The Pye Dog, Magic Boy

Cribs XVI: We Like It On Top
Today we’re off to 715 6th Street, NW (Unit 1202) in The Cosmopolitan condominium and although we have not visited this specific unit, we have visited a unit with a similar floorplan. What do we like about this unit? There aren’t many 3 BR condos downtown but this is one of them so if you’re looking for a spot that has room for visiting relatives and their kids, this is it. Other than the spaciousness, what else do we like about this listing? It features wood floors, western views, a gas fireplace, a nice kitchen, and dedicated parking. And of course, it’s on the top floor.
The MLS number is DC7358861, the list price is $775K, and the area size per public records comes in at 1,295 square feet.

Our Cribs post series explores homes for sale or rent worth pointing out in the downtown DC area. Although the series usually focuses on the core part of downtown which means pointing out condos, we may occasionally stray to adjacent neighborhoods where fee simple houses or commercial properties are for sale. None of these posts are paid placements.
This Is The Moment
We had a great time at the Savor beer festival this past weekend. And for the first time in the three year history of Savor, we have no major food complaints. Of course going into it we assumed the food would be just as terrible as it had been the previous two years. So this year rather than head to a restaurant beforehand, we hosted a pre-Savor Serrano ham party. Not only would the salt cured Spanish ham increase our thirst for beer, it would also allow our guests to carve as much as they wanted. Of course we had to figure out where to get an entire Spanish ham; in PQ we only know of carved slices available at Cowgirl Creamery, but as all our readers know there isn’t a real butcher in sight.
We’ve talked about throwing a Serrano ham party for years. Growing up as 2nd generation Italian-Americans, we always thought of the Italian Prosciutto as the best cured ham you could eat thinly sliced. We still love Prosciutto, but over the years the Serrano that’s been on various charcuterie plates (and the amount we’ve eaten at Jose Andres restaurants) have us convinced that Spanish ham is the way to go. It didn’t take very long to figure out the best way to get such a ham, a simple internet searched told us that La Tienda would be our one-stop-shop for all things Spanish. The best part? La Tienda’s store is just a few hours away in Williamsburg. Continue Reading >>
