Here’s what we were reading last week about neighborhood news in DC. Have neighborhood thoughts? Leave them in the comments!
Downtown – The Downtown BID newsletter is always chock full of goodies so we’ll highlight these two from June’s issue: a) The Peruvian Connection will get a boutique neighbor called Lou Lou (jewelry, handbags and accessories); and b) Cuba Libre Restaurant’s opening is now looking like September 2010. Hat tip: Yesterday’s PQ Living Anonymous 9:52 pm commenter – Lou Lou; Cheryl – Cuba Libre
Downtown – Yep…we’re dead last for Verizon’s FIOS implementation in DC – six to nine years from now. [Washington Business Journal] Hat tip: Cheryl
Chinatown – Shooting in the 800 block of 6th Street (Cross street: H Street) on the night of May 30. [The Triangle] & [MPD-1D Yahoo! Group]
Mount Vernon Triangle – The retail space in the firehouse at 400 Massachusetts Avenue has a taker! Hoo-ray! [The Triangle]
Downtown – More news about 915 F Street NW, the Museum of Arts and Sciences nightspot (scroll two-thirds the way down). [Washington Business Journal]
Cribs XV: What A Deck!
Today’s crib is at 703 6th Street NW [Number 8] and it’s a 2 BR, 1.5 BA, 3 level (if you count the deck) unit in The Myrene. This unit is listed on MLS as DC7312221 with a current list price of $619,900 and 1150 square feet in size. We checked this condo out and what makes it Cribworthy? A few unique elements. It’s in the condo building with the least number of units downtown, it features circular stairways among the three levels and a dedicated 600 square foot roofdeck (the back half of the building’s roof). If you need parking, it’s available for rent monthly in Gallery Place across the street. It’s definitely not a cookie cutter condo and oh what a deck it has!

Yes We Can
Today we introduce a guest writer, PQ Dad, an E Street resident who can be found exploring PQ with his wife and their little girl. PQ Dad is often out with his digital SLR capturing images from all around our neighborhood. We look forward to more posts exploring PQ from a parent’s view.
Is it just me, or are there more families living in Penn Quarter / Downtown? My wife and I are the proud parents of a nine-month old girl, so we may be a bit more sensitive to seeing other families downtown than the average downtown dweller. In our building alone, there are at least five families with kids, and some of us even live in one-bedroom apartments (myself included). But I really do think there are more families choosing to stay downtown post-baby, and I think that’s actually a good thing for Penn Quarter.
It wasn’t too long ago when we were telling our friends that we were expecting a baby. The second thing out of most people’s mouths after telling them the news was, “So when are you guys going to move?”
I think it’s a foregone conclusion these days that when you have a baby downtown, it’s time to give it all up and head out, i.e. move to the suburbs (not that there’s anything wrong with that). I think this is a misnomer, and I’m happy to see other families bucking the trend. Plus, after living with a baby for nine months downtown, it’s actually turned out to be pretty cool.
We have the National Mall as our yard during the good weather days, and we have many inside alternatives for when the weather is not so great. We are able to walk or take the Metro to pretty much everywhere we want to go. It’s pretty good living, if you ask us.
So for those of you thinking about having a baby, but are worried about living downtown, I say forget about it and stop worrying. Take advantage of living in one of the best neighborhoods in DC and come join us on the Google PQ Parents group!
Send Bill To Big Enos Burdette
This Saturday we’ll be attending the third annual Savor craft beer event at the Building Museum. At the first Savor event three years ago there were probably still some people who thought the craft beer movement was just a fad; but surely even the most doubtful can see the writing on the wall. When you can walk into three different liquor stores in PQ and find a craft beer local to Hawaii, but not a single Coors banquet beer, something is happening. Seemingly every city has their own craft breweries these days, a movement we fully support. Not all the beers are good, of course, but it adds a little something to every vacation to not only eat local foods but to drink local beers.
Craft beers will get their due at Savor this weekend though, so we thought an appreciation of mass-produced beers was in order. Continue Reading >>
