Forget Summer Reruns, Screen On The Green Returns
The Post and several blogs are reporting that HBO is bringing back it’s sponsorship (with partners including Comcast) of everyone’s favorite outdoor movie festival. The movement to Save Screen on the Green was a success, now bring on the Bond movies.
Ride Every Bus & Alight At Every Station
We’ve been meeting lots of other Washington DC neighborhoodies (see our DC Neighborhoods linklist in the right column) at various events around town recently and we’re always looking out for fun sites that might be relevant to downtown living that we can pass along to readers. We ride the 30s, X2, 80, L1/2/4 buses and all subway lines regularly and most we know who live downtown use some form of public transit too. We wrote about riding the 30s bus line a little over two years ago but a site we learned about recently and want to pass along called Metro-Venture is dedicating one year to riding every bus line and visiting every Metro station in WMATA’s system. You might say it’s going the extra mile (cue the rim shot).

Here’s what we were reading last week about neighborhood news in DC. Have neighborhood thoughts? Leave them in the comments!
All Over DC – Will the vacant property tax make a comeback? [The Other 35 Percent]
Downtown – The 2009 State of Downtown report is posted online. Not much residential development going on these days but we hope that will change as US government subsidies to the housing market decline over time and the private sector kicks in financing. [Downtown BID] & [Direct PDF Link – 3MB]
Penn Quarter – Our readers are a savvy lot and in-the-know when it comes to restaurant openings. After all, they knew and commented that it was Merzi and not Jamie Oliver opening an Indian fast casual eatery on 7th St NW next to Pitango Gelato. Now, the press release and a WBJ blog post super-double confirm it. [Linda Roth PR] & [WaBizJo]
Penn Quarter – That WBJ is pretty savvy too and they reported that the Wagamama space on 7th St NW, formerly Olsson’s Bookstore (may she rest in peace), is being shopped around because Waga is “re-evaluating the options.” It’s one of the largest vacant retail spaces in our neighborhood. Maybe subdividing it will be the result? [WashBizJo]
Shaw – We’ve driven by the new library under construction in Shaw many times and it’s great to see the DC Public Library system revive. Now you can be a part of the library too by being included in the community mural that will be somewhere in or on the library! [RenewShaw]
Mount Vernon Triangle – More detailed information about Steuart Development’s plans to build a 390 unit apartment building near CityVista in the lot bounded by New York Ave, L St NW and 4th St NW. [The Triangle]
Penn Quarter – The Washington CityPaper does a nice job of uncovering what is going on at 915 F St NW, the former home of the Platinum nightclub. [Washington CityPaper]
Pitango Gelato Opens Their Doors (413 7th St NW)
Even though the press release indicates Pitango Gelato’s (413 7th St NW) opening today, the newest in chilly, organic desserts-to-go in our neighborhood opened yesterday afternoon where we found a bevy of customers in line. In an area where openings are sometimes measured in years, Pitango sprinted to an open from January to May of this year. Both gelato and sorbet are part of the line-up; we tried a regular cup of gelato split between hazelnut and crème fraiche. The hazelnut was good but the crème fraiche was divine. Regular cups (up to 2 flavors) are $4.85 and large cups (up to 3 flavors) are $6.50. Also available are a variety of Italian coffees brewed with organic, locally roasted espresso beans.
