Two New Penn Quarter Restaurant Openings Coming In Early September

Ed. Note (9/5): We updated the opening date of Succotash to TBD as no firm date has been reported yet. We do have evidence that preparations are moving along quickly inside though. Stay tuned!
DC Eater has its usual awesome coverage of all things foodie in DC and we noted that two Penn Quarter/Chinatown restaurants are slated to open around Labor Day. The highlights are below and the backstories are in this Eater article:
- Crimson View (627 H St NW) – Our neighborhood will get its very own awesome view rooftop bar in the Pod Hotel. The Crimson Whiskey Bar opens later in September in the basement. These aren’t quite the July openings that was hoped for but late is better than never. (Check out this Pod Hotel page and Washingtonian article to get an image of what the view looks like from the top.) Menu highlights can be found here.
Opening Friday, September 1
- Succotash (915 F St NW) – This restaurant with a sister venue already operating in National Harbor is directly across the street from The Ventana condo and next to Ultrabar on F St NW. We announced this restaurant’s coming way back in June of 2016.
Opening TBD Monday, September 4 (tentative per Eater DC – awaiting final opening date from the restaurant)
Joe’s Seafood, Prime Steak, & Stone Crab (750 15th St NW) On A Sunday
Joe’s Seafood, Prime Steak, & Stone Crab opened a while ago now at 750 15th St and we’ve been meaning to get over there. It’s on the western edge of the neighborhood at the corner of 15th and H St NW and we generally don’t walk over that way too much unless friends or family are in town for a visit. We finally made it for a quick foray on a Sunday afternoon and generally liked what we experienced enough to make plans for a full lunch or dinner there. (If you want to get your choice of tables, get there Sunday in the first two hours they open and you’ll have the run of the place.)
We opted for a simple appetizer during our virgin visit: a jumbo shrimp cocktail, a cup of crab bisque, and a diet Coke. The shrimp was not the most tender shrimp we’ve had exhibiting a bit too much “air time” but it was acceptable. The bisque, on the other hand, was rich and savory accented nicely with small seafood and onion bits in the mixture. We like it. The diet Coke was, well, diet Coke…served from a bottle as one sees in many steak house environments (no soda gun).
Looking at the menus it’s clear to see that brunch is the bargain meal here with items running from $12 to $22. Lunch and dinner are fully steakhouse priced but this is more likely an expense account venue than not. The wine list is noteworthy in that it doesn’t have a zillion selections on it but it has a nice spread from reasonably priced to expensive. It also does a good job of highlighting both half bottles and magnums without overwhelming the reader. Another good bargain, oysters and signature cocktails are half price during Cocktail Hours which run 2:30 pm to 6:30 pm daily.
The main bar and lounge are open all the time Joe’s is open while the dining room area in the west end of the restaurant opens for dinner only. There’s a bar in the dining area also. Restrooms are upstairs along with a private dining room and another dedicated bar for private events. The space is open and reasonably inviting so we’ll head back there soon!
Capital One Cafe Coming To Chinatown/Penn Quarter (732 7th St NW)
Capital One announced that it will be opening a Capital One Cafe in the former Radio Shack space at 732 7th St NW in late 2018. This Washington Business Journal article details the plans.
