Archives/NM/PQ Metro Station Closed This Weekend
Metro is doing much maintenance this weekend and that means that in the Penn Quarter, the Archives/Navy Memorial/Penn Quarter station will be closed Friday, October 9 at 10:30 pm through the end of Monday, October 12. Normal station hours will resume on Tuesday, October 13. The Metro press release and web page can be found here. Other impacts include a shuttle bus taking the place of the Green line in the affected areas, other station closures and the Yellow line being rerouted to hug the Blue line to include the Potomac River tunnel.

Artist Brings A Touch Of Halloween To PQ, Including Scavenger Hunt

PQ artist, Andrew Wodzianski, will be opening a horror film-inspired exhibition tonight at 6pm @ FlashPoint Gallery (916 G St NW)! The horror film in question is none other than William Castle’s House on Haunted Hill. In addition to the exhibition, Wodzianski is conducting a Twitter-enabled scavenger hunt where followers redeem their findings for a work of art from his exhibition. The scavenger hunt description says that clues will be hidden near and far, so we’re expecting some clues to be found in the PQ. You can follow the HouseHuntDC scavenger hunt over here. Fun!
Works In Progress
It looks like the old K&B Newsstand (1004 F street, pictured above with worker on ladder) is just about ready to open as a souvenir shop. We don’t have inside information on this, we’re basing this on the fact that space looks ready for racks of merchandise. We had our doubts about this location when the work began, but it has in fact cleaned up nicely. While the exterior isn’t anything special, it will be nice to have something other than an empty storefront as the plans for that corner are apparently on hold.
Speaking of empty storefronts, just next door to the newsstand space is the old DC SAMs spot (1006 F street). That location now has a sign in the window advertising Adamstein & Demetriou Architects. You may know A&D from projects such as Jurys Hotel, the Podesta’s residence, and PQ’s own Zola Wine & Kitchen (we won’t lie, we didn’t know any of that until we went to the A&D website). We’re hoping the ad being in the window of the old DC SAMS space means something fun is coming to that spot.
Our final bit of news on empty storefronts is from Maggie Moos (1001 Penn Ave NW, on 11th between Penn and E), although it probably would have made a better fit in our post on seasonal work last month. We recently noticed that Maggie Moo’s has closed its doors in PQ, but only temporarily. The lights are off and the signs have come down, yet a note in the store promises better things to come next spring. The note reads:
Loyal customers we are closed for the season and will be making renovations this winter. We will reopen in the spring, thank you for a wonderful summer.
High Rise Life: Elevator Etiquette
This is a new column we’re going to try on Mondays called High Rise Life focusing on experiences encountered when you share an apartment or condo building with many neighbors. Where will you fit in ?
Almost all downtown residents have to take an elevator to get in and out of their home and that got us to thinking about those ten to thirty seconds you may be sharing with your neighbors getting to know more about them. We looked and found a full website dedicated to elevator rules including sections on holding the door, closing the door and blocking the door. But we know that not every ride is equal as we’ve seen and experienced it all from the polite to the rude.
Fob in and offer to push buttons or don’t offer and make sure others belong in the building? Remind neighbors that bicycles and their owners usually ride the freight elevator or zip it? Heel your dog or let him/her sniff around and be friendly? What is good neighborly elevator etiquette?
(Please remember our comment policy when leaving a comment.)
Heard In The ‘Hood which normally appears on Monday will move to the weekend (Saturday or Sunday).
