Better Late Than Never
So much of what we write about on this blog is new (or at least new to us). Either a new business opening or something that we’ve only recently discovered. That makes a post like this a little embarrassing, as we sometimes overlook places we’ve been going to (and are completely satisfied with) before there was any PQ to write about. This post is about making up for one such oversight. We know the following may read like a paid-for advertisement – all we can tell you is it’s not.
We’ve been having our teeth cared for by a downtown institution for the last 11 years. We’ve recommended Dr James E. Johnson to people in search of a dentist so often you’d think we were part owners (we’re not). Located inside 555 12th St NW (corner of 12th & F; next to the Celadon Spa), Dr Johnson & Associates is made up of just about the friendliest people you could ever hope to meet.
We don’t know how long Dr J has been at the 555 12th St location but as we noted above it’s been at least 11 years. Dr J is also a PQ neighbor who walks to work; it’s always a pleasure to run into him at a restaurant or on the street. Earlier this year Dr J’s office experimented with Saturday hours, but their website doesn’t note those now so we’re not sure if they’re still in effect. We’ve always preferred weekday morning appointments and try to get our cleanings as early as possible. With a dentist this close you can have your teeth cleaned, walk back home for breakfast, and still make it to work before 9.
We know most of us choose our doctors based on our insurance plan first, and recommendations second. But if you’re in the market for a great dentist, we’ve got the guy for you.

Mount Vernon Triangle – Join the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) for a community bike ride this Thursday. [The (Mount Vernon) Triangle]
Park View – Some colorful murals coming along on the side of the Park View Rec Center. Where is Park View, you may ask? It’s aside Georgia Avenue in between Howard University and Petworth. We also welcome the Park View website to our DC Neighborhoods link list in the right column of PQ Living. [Park View, D.C.]
The Ice Cream Man Cometh
On Friday we snapped this photo of an ice cream vendor rolling through the streets of PQ on a customized moped. The light turned green before we could make a purchase so we can’t speak to price and quality, but it sounded like a nice treat on such a pretty day.
One Possible Option For The MLK Library
A PQ Living reader pointed us to this WaBizJo article about how the National Trust for Historic Preservation may have DC’s Martin Luther King Library (901 G St, NW) in its sights as a new headquarters building. The National Trust is currently on Massachusetts Avenue just east of Dupont Circle, is moving out of their current space and could fill about one quarter of the MLK Library so they’d need to find one or more other partners looking for space.
Would moving the MLK be worthwhile if the building itself received a rehab?
