PQ Link Roundup: Heard In The ‘Hood
All of DC – Marc Fisher, local color commentator, signs off from his Raw Fisher column and blog and Potomac Confidential live discussions on the Washington Post. We absolutely agree with him that “Where we live still matters.” and he’s promised to appear elsewhere working on a new project “to figure out what connects us.” We’ll want to know where so we can follow along. [WaPo – Raw Fisher]
Downtown – Architecture firm OTJ at 1412 Eye Street, NW is profiled. The building OTJ rehabbed for office space used to be the hippest dance club in Washington DC for part of the 1990s. The clue? OTJ’s entrance is actually on Zei Alley, similarly named as the old multilevel Club Zei, which still shows up on Yahoo! with a yellow pages listing. Probably not as desirable as an Eye Street address though. [DC Metrocentric]
Mount Vernon Triangle – New tavern application filed for building next to the Papa John’s facing Massachsuetts Ave. Nice to see “green shoots” in that area. [The (Mount Vernon) Triangle]
Mount Pleasant – Michelle Obama visits an elementary school in MP. The Obamas are getting out and about in their new town and we like it. [The 42 (Bus)]
The Good Times Are Killing Me
We woke up this morning with bleary eyes and a heavy head. It took a couple of pieces of burnt toast and several cups of black coffee before we felt good enough to put this post together. But just like last year, it was worth it. Despite the high price and (once again) terrible food, Savor was fantastic. The food complaint is a small one to us though; while it is billed as a food and beer event let’s be honest, we’re not there for the food.
The Building Museum was a beautiful location for the event; easy to navigate and never more than a few minutes wait for the brewers at each table. The layout was significantly improved from last year, each square table held four brewers with plenty of room between each grouping. Perhaps the best improvement was the addition of water pitchers and buckets to empty your tastings, one of our biggest complaints from last year.
We certainly hope the Brewers Association continues to improve and promote Savor. While we’re not fans of the food, it was still very popular for the majority of those in attendance. Especially the cheese table & the oyster bar, both of which had long lines the entire night.
Our favorite brewer from last year, Henryk Orlik of Heiner Brau was again in attendance, we made his table our first and last stops of the night. It’s the brewers like Henryk who make Savor such a worthwhile event.
Photo Of The Week: Stepsitters
Photo of the Week honors go to Karon who tagged this photo of National Portrait Gallery stepsitters with ‘pqliving’. Other tags suggest this picture was taken with a Holga camera which means real black and white film was used – we really liked the artistry! Gives the photo that old time feel to it.
Tag your photos with pqliving on flickr, the photo sharing site, and they become eligible to be the Photo of the Week here on PQ Living.
Is That A Sofa On 7th Street?
It is. But this isn’t a yard sale nor an eviction. No T-shirt uniformed street teams promoting Blackberrys to government workers. No ad-hoc charity lovers selling Krispy Kreme donut boxes for $5 in front of the Metro escalators. No sidewalk floormat signs that appeared until DCRA put the kibosh on them. Enter Zipcar, the popular car sharing service that has its DC office at 717 D St, NW, and what we think is the most unorthodox attention getter we’ve seen downtown. Unorthodox enough that we call it news. Continue Reading >>
