Howto: Finding (Cheap?) Gas
Despite having a decidedly less expensive BMW lifestyle (bus/bike-Metro-walk) living in the PQ, there is sometimes a need for that occasional spin out to a wine festival with friends or a BJ’s run to pick up quantities of food or a command appearance at a party in Reston (ghast!). And for that, you need gas…petrol…juice.
Where are the closest fill ups to the PQ? Gas stations in Shaw, Logan and Capitol Hill top our list:
1. 9th Street BP – 1317 9th Street, NW (between N and O) – Shaw
Nearby landmarks: BeBar (bar), Vegetate (restaurant), Washington Convention Center (meeting hall, sometimes mistaken for a battleship)
2. Logan Circle BP – 1301 13th Street, NW (between N and O) – Logan – pictured above
Nearby landmarks: Mr. Wash (car wash), Logan Circle (traffic circle with a Union general in the middle)
3. Alina Enterprises Exxon – 200 Massachusetts Ave, NE – Capitol Hill
Nearby landmark: Union Station (train station)
4. Capitol Hill Exxon – 339 Pennsylvania Ave, SE – Capitol Hill
Nearby landmarks: Sonoma (restaurant), Pour House (bar)
We like two websites to help find the nearest gas stations, Gasbuddy and Mapquest’s gas price feature. Price data on both guide you in finding the nearest and cheapest gas station. Of the four stations mentioned above, the Alina Exxon in Capitol Hill always seems to suck us in (maybe it’s the ease of using Speedpass).

Fringe Festival Gearing Up…Starts Thursday
Fan of the unjuried, the unusual and the offbeat? This town will be right for you for the next couple of weeks as the 3rd annual incarnation of the Capital Fringe Festival is set to open the day after tomorrow, July 10, and run until July 27. Many of the events take place in downtown or near downtown venues with the main box office (aka “Fort Fringe”) occupying the old A.V. Ristorante Italian restaurant at 607 New York Ave, NW. You can also purchase tickets online or if you can’t make it in DC, there are numerous other similar festivals around the USA.
A PQ welcome goes out to the Fringe!
Intercity Buses Don’t Have To Move…Just Yet
The original plan to move the loading and unloading of all the intercity bus companies that pick up and drop off downtown to L’Enfant Plaza has been scuttled by DDOT for now according to a WaPo article. The article cites safety, convenience and logistical concerns on the part of some of the bus companies that would be affected by the move. PQ Living’s original post on DDOT’s proposed move appeared June 23.
Thanks to a PQ Living tipster for pointing us to the WaPo coverage.
Ed. Note: After the writing of this post, Marc “Raw” Fisher got in his own licks on the matter in today’s WaPo online. However, we’re not entirely in agreement with one of the benefits he touts (“…waiting bus riders enliven city sidewalks..” ) nor the only adverse impact being “…that felt by big bad Greyhound…”
