Follow Your Nose To Chef At Market
Most Thursdays, I leave work too late to enjoy the PQ Freshfarm Market. But yesterday, when I exited the Metro, I was overcome by an amazing smell. My nose became a heat seeking missile as I searched for the origin of the amazing aroma.
In fact, I was so captivated that I was nearly hit by a Land Rover entering the Lansburgh garage.
But when I found my way to Ferial Welsh of The Mushroom Stand and her heavenly Oyster Mushroom Fritters (lightly battered and fried mushrooms with feta cheese and hot sauce), the taste was worth the near death experience. My only disappointment being that I didn’t buy two orders of mushrooms.

Welsh was at the market courtesy of Freshfarm’s Chef at Market program. Every week, a local restaurant/chef/farmer gives a cooking demonstration and then either serves up free samples or items for sale.
In addition to the fritters, Welsh was serving up portobello mushroom sandwiches and mushroom salads. She also had some yummy looking fresh mushrooms for sale. But judging by the line, the fritters were the favorite.
Next week, the Chef at Market will host Whole Foods and on July 24, Oyamel will delight market goers with their squash blossom festival.
I guess I need to start making plans to leave work early for the next few Thursdays.
Super-OverDrive!
We’ve already written (twice) about the audio book downloads at DC Public library. Both posts saw comments angry about the fact that these downloads were not iPod compatible. Well be angry no more, back in late June the DC Public Library announced that they now offer DRM free downloads!
This isn’t the entire collection, but they’re moving in that direction. So far more than 700 titles are available DRM free, for use on all portable media devices (compared with more than 4000 DRM titles in the system).
DC Public Library doesn’t get to choose to remove the DRM restrictions, it’s on a publisher by publisher basis. Lets hope that one day publishers & media companies will agree on a standard DRM format that allows everyone to play these titles, regardless of the device they’re playing them on.
Host A Filmmaker In September
Do you have a spare bed or sofa?
The DC Shorts Film Festival, taking place at the E Street Cinema and the US Navy Memorial, is looking for housing volunteers for Thursday, September 11 through Sunday, September 14.
Housing volunteers will be paired with 1 or 2 filmmakers. You provide them a place to crash and DC Shorts will reward you with festival tickets and party admissions. Last year, volunteers housed more than 3 dozen filmmakers from as far away as Italy.
This year, they expect a record number of filmmakers to attend. Please consider hosting a person or two. The experience is amazing.
For more information, please email info@dcshorts.com or call 202-393-4266. DC Shorts will respond with a questionnaire to match the right filmmaker(s) with you.
Tennis Opens Up Downtown
In early May, we reported on the Washington Kastles tennis team taking over the Center City Parking Lot for the summer season. WaPo has a nice write up about the home opener last night with Serena Williams. Sounds like it was another downtown hit!
