Hearing the recent news that the monthly median house price has fallen for the first time in 40 years and 2007 was the worst sales year on record for new homes, you can’t help but wonder what the impact is on our own downtown slice of DC. The practical evidence comes in the form of foreclosure and potential short sales visible when contrasting active condo listings and DC real estate sales and tax records. The anecdotal evidence comes when talking to friends, walking through open houses or seeing reductions promoted in the Sunday real estate section. The question remains, what is my condo really worth? We’ll look at three measures that can draw a box around the answer.

Let The People Eat Donuts!
They say a picture says a thousand words. Instead of writing a couple of thousand words, we’re posting a couple of pictures. Dunkin Donuts is certifiably open at 601 F Street, NW, and the posted hours are from 6 am to 10 pm every day of the week. For seating, there are three two tops along the walls and a bunch of stools that still need to be put to use so plan on carry out most of the time. You heard it here.

Creative Storage Solutions
Where do you keep your belongings when you don’t have a home? The answer for the homeless in Downtown DC appears to be newspaper boxes (well the free newspaper boxes anyway). The Onion, the Epoch Times, and the Express boxes seem to be the most popular Penn Quarter daily lockers. Although the various newspaper companies may not be thrilled about this usage of their property, what else is a homeless person to do? Where can a person without a home store their treasured possessions during the day?
Updating My Celebrity List
Most everyone has a celebrity list, Mrs. Columbo has one (George Clooney) and I’ve got one too. My choice always elicits groans from woman, and secret agreement from men: Tara Reid.
But move over Tara, I’m officially updating my list: Athena, the goddess of Wisdom & War is now at the top of the chart. Just as she sprung from Zeus’ head, she’s sprung into my heart (aawww)! What changed my mind? Mrs. Columbo & I recently caught Argonautika at the Lansburgh. It was lots of fun, but my memory of all but Athena is foggy. Sure right now the goddess only has eyes for Jason & Hercules, but I’m sure if I could only be tasked with some epic quest (bring a grocery store to PQ?) that she’d notice me.
Mrs. Columbo says there were lots of other great performances too, such as Hercules (played like a frat boy at a homecoming game) and Hylas (damn those water nymphs!), but she hasn’t updated her list yet.
