It’s a couple of days old news, but we didn’t hear about it until this morning. The Washington Business Journal notes:
- Balducci’s co-CEO has resigned in the midst of the gourmet grocery store’s decision not to move forward with a planned store in Penn Quarter.
Peter Krieger, who was one of two interim co-CEOs at the Bethesda company since founder Mark Ordan left to join The Mills Corp. in February, is leaving to focus on his family, according to company spokeswoman Melissa Daly.
Maybe it is all the better that we have another grocer move into the Jefferson space – we don’t need all of this uncertainty with a neighborhood grocer.
Free Dance Concerts Coming To Penn Quarter
The DC Commission on the Arts & Humanities will host two free dance concerts at the Ronald Reagan Building & International Trade Center (1300 Penn Ave. NW)
Sept 22, 7pm: Disco in the District
..featuring Rose Royce, Evelyn Champagne King, Rob Base with DJ EZ Rock and the queen of disco dance music Martha Wash
Sept 29, 7pm: Motown in the Downtown
..featuring The Temptations Review starring noted Temptation and crowd favorite Dennis Edwards who will perform the greatest hits from one of America’s most famous bands
Chinatown Goes Italian!
The mayoral race is basically over, so what’s going to happen with the Orange for Mayor headquarters at 623 – 625 H St NW?
Maisha sends us a Washington Business Journal article announcing that a German-based casual Italian restaurant chain plans to open three units in D.C. as part of a massive worldwide expansion. On of those units will be at 623-625 H St!
The chain is named Vapiano and will open either in December or February.
The Commercialization Of Local Government In DC?
Charter schools have been going strong in DC, and so have Business Improvement Districts (BID). The WaPo had a nice article on how BIDs have been “filling the gap” where local governments have failed residents and businesses. Six districts exist and seven others are currently under consideration.
Penn Quarter/Gallery Place is in the Downtown BID – the largest and oldest BID – that was created in 1997 when the MCI Center opened up.
The most interesting part of the article is the last three paragraphs that start with: The Downtown BID is weighing whether to seek a legal change that would allow it to also tax some residential properties.
