Second Neighborhood cove Cowork Space Now Open In Chinatown (601 I St NW)
Our friends at cove, the coworking space with a few outlets around DC, let us know that they now have a second location open in Chinatown at 601 I St NW. This location is right next to the newly opened La Colombe coffee shop on the northwest corner of the 6th and I intersection. From the e-mail:
After opening cove 7th St, we realized we love Chinatown so much we just had to have another. (OK, real talk. Dangerously Delicious Pies may have also played a role in the decision.) Our newest location is now open at 601 I St NW. It’s a two-floor affair—just like its marginally older brother on 7th—with a lounge area for talking and getting to know people, and an upstairs perfectly set up for head-down-getting-things-done.

On a more serious note and despite the claim made about roller skating Hooters servers, this Aljazeera piece talks about the loss of Chinatowns in America and along with the accompanying video above do have a perspective worth considering about how one Chinese resident who lives in the Museum Square Apartment (401 K St NW) feels about the pace of development and gentrification in the neighborhood. Many Chinese residents live in Museum Square and in the Wah Luck House (800 6th St NW) and Museum Square’s owner now wants to get out of the Section 8 housing business. It certainly has been our experience that we see less and less Chinese people walking our streets than when we first moved downtown over a decade ago.
All that said, a little bit of journalistic diligence on the part of Aljazeera would have revealed that Hooters waitresses don’t use roller skates when serving food. Despite the article’s claim, they are hard working from what we’ve observed and use their feet.
Mehak Indian Cuisine (817 7th St NW) Now Closed
A long time stalwart on 7th Street, Mehak Indian Cuisine (817 7th St NW), is now closed. All the restaurant furniture is gone, one of the front windows is damaged, and workers could be seen moving in and out of the vacant first floor. A PQ Living reader wrote Mehak to see if they’ll reopen but they responded that they lost their lease, thanked the community for 25 years of support, and to visit Masoi, another Indian restaurant on K St NW. Ed. Note: The phone number for Mehak has now been disconnected too.
We visited Mehak a few times over more than a decade of living downtown. One more old school DC restaurant is now out of the neighborhood.
