Summer Sips: Belle De Brillet Anyone?
In the waning days of summer nothing beats a light fruit infused liqueur cocktail with a minty touch. In this case we’re talking about the Versailles available at the Root Cellar Whiskey Bar in the basement of Pinea at the W Hotel (15th and Pennsylvania Ave, NW).
The ingredients include:
- Vodka
- Belle de Brillet (pear infused cognac)
- Orange
- Lemon
- Muddled mint
Formerly the Wine Bar of J&G Steakhouse, this cozy and generally uncrowded spot is a favorite of ours.
Read Other People’s Secrets At The National Postal Museum (2 Mass Ave NE)

The National Postal Museum (2 Massachusetts Ave NE) is hosting “PostSecret: The Power of a Postcard” through September 2016. The exhibition highlights PostSecret, an ongoing community mail art project that encourages people to mail homemade postcards with anonymous secrets to founder Frank Warren. Since 2004, Warren has collected the postcards, posted a weekly rotation of postcards on the PostSecret website and published six books of postcard collections.
It began when Warren handed out postcards to strangers less than a mile from the National Postal Museum and left them in public places—asking people to share a secret. He made two requests: The secret had to be absolutely true, and it had to be a secret never shared before. Now, more than a decade later, Warren has received more than 500,000 postcards, and the PostSecret blog has had more than 700 million visits.
The museum is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.(closed Dec. 25) and is directly across the street from Union Station on the north side of Massachusetts Ave.
DC’s Summer Restaurant Week Runs August 17 To 23
Everyone may leave town in August but they are missing RAMW’s twice annual Restaurant Week (RW) which runs August 17 to 23 this summer. Lunches are $22 and dinners $35 and it is an opportunity for diners to check out the menus of untried restaurants at relatively subdued prices. This year there are prizes in the form of a diner rewards program although it’s not really clear how one registers for the prizes or what qualifies a diner for a prize.
In case you were wondering, there are rules restaurants have to abide by to participate in RW promotion. Caveat emptor…not all of the RW menus are a bargain.
