More Light Shining On Plight Of Museum Square Apartment Residents
The potential redevelopment of the Museum Square Apartments (401 K St NW) and the impact on its residents, many of whom are Chinese, is starting to take root in the DC press and in the local community’s discourse. Today’s Washington Post includes an article in the Style section that paints the human picture of the Museum Square community. In addition, Jews United for Justice, Think Local First, and Andy Shallal (owner of Busboys and Poets right down the street), are hosting a party to support the Museum Square tenants’ struggle to remain in their community.
There’s no doubt that redevelopment of downtown DC and the spread of gentrification eastward through the city makes the Museum Square property more valuable than it was 10 years ago. That said, one does have to ponder whether or not uprooting longstanding residents without a sensible plan for resettlement and allowing a real estate company to flaunt the spirit of DC housing law is something the broader DC community and the local neighborhood should allow happen.
Green Thumb
This view from a friend’s balcony of the rooftop garden at Oyamel (401 7th St., NW) got us a little curious. Thanks to an article from Washington City Paper, we discovered that Chef Jose Andres is trying his hand at growing his own produce in the heart of DC with the help of Up Top Acres. Several local restaurants and chefs have been going hyper local with their own gardens and farms, such as Charlie Palmer Steak, Poste, and Lafayette at the Hay Adams. If you’re like us and instead of a green thumb you kill everything you plant, then let the friendly folks at Love & Carrots help you plan and maintain anything from kitchen herbs to a full produce planter.
