PBS’ History Detectives To Discover Clara Barton’s 7th Street Office
GSA Video (above) – Length: 2 minutes
We’ve gotten a tip that the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) has produced an episode of History Detectives exploring the origins of an 1866 letter from Clara Barton’s Office of Missing Soldiers, a former GSA property in our very own Penn Quarter. The address of the office/apartment is 437 1/2 7th Street NW across the street from the Shakespeare Theatre’s Lansburgh Theatre and the GSA is working with a friends group, the National Museum of Civil War Medicine, American Red Cross, and other organizations on plans to conserve, interpret, and make the space accessible to the public. When it will open, we can’t say for sure but the video above is the first we have ever seen of the inside of the space and is worth checking out. Although this History Detectives episode should air tonight, we could not find it on WETA’s (Channel 26) program guide for tonight. Enterprising viewers will be able to watch the episode online later this week. For yet more information, check out this link to a GSA website describing the history of Clara Barton’s office.
