Pedestrians Gain Ground On E Street
The sidewalk on E Street between 8th & 9th was finally returned to the pedestrians. We’re told the first of the DLA Piper folks will be moving in very soon as well (late September/early October).
Now if only we could get those F Street sidewalks back…

about Breakwell’s. That place is awesome and I hope they rebound quickly.
But about open sidewalks! Didn’t notice it posted on this blog, but the Reynolds Center’s 7th Street sidewalk finally opened back up (after 8 years!) a couple weekends back (like 9/7 or something). That sidewalk is much more vital to the neighborhood than the F Street side of the building, although it looks like courtyard work is finishing up there. I saw some trees being loaded into the courtyard this morning. Can’t be much after that.
The Breakwell’s store was covered in DCist today. The owners said it was started by kids using fireworks:
…the fire was started over the weekend by a group of kids playing with fireworks — the sparks ended up igniting some garbage cans left in the exterior alcove entrance of Breakwell’s, which then shot flames up across the brick facade, blowing out the Pepco meters and electricity hookups at the front of the building in their path. The fire department was responsible for the rest of the damage, according to the guys from WIDE Prints, as they took off the metal bars over the windows and broke the glass in order to fight the blaze. The interior of WIDE was not damaged, while the interior of Breakwell’s mostly just looks like it was damaged by water used by the fire department. Calls to Breakwell’s indicated their phone is not currently working.
Why haven’t any of the Shaw/Mt Vernon Square blogs posted anything about the store? I’m thinking the comments would be more appropriate on their blogs since the shop is in that neighborhood.
Its in BAA’s area & they mostly do newsletter. we have been posting info on our mvsna listserve & so has BAA. That said, I’m very glad DCist covered it. BTW anyone can post on the MVSNA blog.
actually a resident did post on the mvsna blog:

it really sucks that this happened to such a wonderful neighborhood establishment. Ive been going there just about every weekend, breakwells is well worth a visit. i hope their insurance company doesnt give them any crap, pepco moves its tail and they are up & running soon.
Sorry, the comment form is closed at this time.
This is a few blocks away from Penn Quarter, but I saw this morning that Breakwell’s, our great neighborhood coffee shop at 9th and M, suffered a fire sometime in the last few days. I think people were inside cleaning up today, but the damage looked pretty substantial, and almost all of the front windows were boarded up.
Hopefully they have enough insurance to renovate and re-open.
