Pedicabs Coming To Gallery Place!
GPLiving was out and about a few days ago and noticed a Pedicab rolling up 7th St. Too bad we didn’t have the camera handy! We thought this was just a freak occurrence of an “independent pedicab driver” testing the waters for business. Today, however, we learn that full fledged pedicab service is expected to begin on July 4th!
For the uninitiated, pedicabs are basically a bicycle taxi service. The front part of the bicycle looks normal, and that back part contains a two person (covered) seat. Everything else works like a normal taxi – albeit a little slower, more fun, and friendlier to the environment.
The company offering service is called DC Pedicab. Most exciting is DC Pedicab’s list of favorite spots to pick up a pedicab: Bustling nightlife in Adams Morgan, Dupont Circle, Foggy Bottom, Capitol Hill, and Gallery Place.
Craigslist watchers noticed DC Pedicab are advertising pedicab positions.

This sounds like a tourist gimmick. Does this add any distinction to our neighborhood or does it make it add to the Fuddruckers cheeziness factor? Wonder what others think.
Pedicabs have been largely successful in other large cities. They do seem to focus on recreational uses, rather than business crowd. They tend to run more on the weekends and evenings.
Lastly, they are supposed to be much cheaper than a car-based taxi.
Segways and 8-person party-bicycles are tourist gimmicks but I think this is actually a good idea. It sounds like a good alternative to our overpriced taxi system. Yes, tourists will probably love to take them but I don’t see anything wrong with that.
They do this is Dublin, on weekend nights downtown, and the drivers are cute young college guys from Trinity College…I think more people take them for the view than anything else
Does anyone know how much they charge–is it based on distance or time, or both? I can’t find pricing information anywhere. They’ll have to be significantly cheaper than cabs if they want any customers besides tourists.
Sorry, the comment form is closed at this time.

This is great news! But the big question is: will they be on the zone system or the meter system?
It will be great to have an alternative to traditional cabs, although I couldn’t imagine being a driver on a hot and humid day like today.
