Chinatown – Chinese New Year is this upcoming weekend. Per the usual custom, there will be a parade and a five story tall firecracker. The parade starts at 2 pm at 6th and I St NW and winds its way to a finish at 6th and H St NW. Events are also planned to take place at the Chinatown Cultural Center at 616 H St NW from 11 am to 5 pm. This is always a good time! [Chinese New Year - DC Parade] & [Chinatown Cultural Center - New Year Event Schedule]

Penn Quarter – Oyamel (corner of 7th and D St NW) is expanding into the space now formerly occupied by Ticket Place fronting 7th Street which will add 60 to 80 seats of capacity to the restaurant. [Eater DC]

Verizon Center – The Washington Capitals are back in action now that the NHL strike is over but their 2-6-1 record puts them in the basement of the Southeast Division of the Eastern Conference and second worst in the whole NHL. A short season will not give them a lot of runway to recover. [NHL website]

Penn Quarter – Ashok Bajaj announces the name of his new restaurant project in the old Zola restaurant space at 800 F St NW. The website header of any one of  Bajaj’s restaurants (we looked at 701) also offers a reveal stating “NoPa – Kitchen + Bar – Opening Spring 2013″. We’re going to go with April as the target date. Penn Quarter – For all the lovers of vinyl out there, the DC Record Fair took place at Penn Social. This takes us back to the days we’d flip through records at our college’s student union building. [Brightest Young Things]

Penn Quarter – The FBI and GSA spell out what they’re looking for in a new campus. This is the site swap deal we’ve mentioned before that would whisk the FBI out of their headquarters building at 950 Pennsylvania Ave. [WaPo] & [Washington Business Journal]

Downtown- Speaking of Pennsylvania Avenue, Trump’s request to go easy on the taxes on the Old Post Office Pavilion redevelopment project was rejected. [WaPo]

Penn Quarter – Google is sponsoring a “Get Your Business Online” event at the Woolly Mammoth Theatre (641 D St NW) on February . [Google]  Disclaimer: Penn Quarter Living uses Google’s AdSense/AdWords platform. PQL was not compensated for the above mention.

All Over DC – This week is the winter Restaurant Week put on by restos all over DC. A nice website summarizes the wheres, whats, and hows. [Restaurant Association of Metropolitan Washington]

Chinatown – Yo! Sushi, next to Panera on H St at 7th St, should open by the end of March. [Eater DC]

Penn Quarter – Barron’s reviews Minibar (accompanies video at top of page). Calls it a “bargain” at $500 per person all in. [Barron's]

Penn Quarter Crib(s) of the Week – Most of the residences available in Penn Quarter are in large condo or apartment complexes but there are a few exceptions. Today we’re highlighting one of those exceptions which is the cluster of rental apartments above the Cowgirl Creamery cheese shop at 919 F Street NW. These apartments are dangerously close to Cowgirl, Co Co. Sala, and District of Pi so they aren’t suitable for our waistlines, but they are for someone who wants to have a unique PQ place to live. For that reason, they are our Crib(s) of the Week. [Craigslist - Apartments for Rent] & [DC Rentals Online]

NoPa — North of Pennsylvania Avenue; I started something when at a meeting I jokingly called the area, later called Mt. Vernon Triangle, NoMa (North of Mass Ave) after SoHo (South of Houston in NYC) And so it spreads!

Since when was the Old PO Building on Pa. Ave. at 12th Street in Chinatown — oh, right, before the Federal Triangle was built and Chinatown moved north. I thought the Metro station across the street was called Federal Triangle
