PQ Babies?

A loyal PQL reader, who is also expecting soon, wrote in to ask: “I was just wondering how many other new moms and babies there are in the neighborhood. ”
We don’t know where this post will lead, but to all of our PQ parents, feel free to leave a note/question/comment in the comments section. Maybe a new PQ parent could set up a google email group and post the link to it in the comments section?

Thanks! I am the expectant reader. I signed up for the google group and I am looking forward to connecting with new moms. I am due June 4th.
Thanks for posting this. I am an expectant mom too (due in nov) and would love to meet other moms and moms to be. Will definitely join the google group. Would love to hear from working moms about daycares, nanny care, etc in the downtown area!
As a grandma of one I am so happy to see this post- my daughter lives in Seattle and their neighborhood started Greenlake Moms Yahoo group. My daughter has found it so helpful. From exercise groups, to babysitters, to finding someone to do house painting – she reaches out to other Mom’s for support. Good luck to all you new and about to be Moms!
There may be more kids in PQ than you expect. There are two toddlers living on my floor alone in my building.
This is a great thread. Kids are a great sign of life in the neighborhood. I recently heard of a group of parents working through the red tape trying to find somewhere to set up a playground in or near PQ.
there are a number of newly formed families with infants in my building. it’s great to have a diversity of ages around.
Planning on having a kid soon, hopefully, but very, very concerned about the availability and cost of daycare.
I’ll go ahead and post the basics of my daycare search results from about 18 months ago. Please speak up if anyone has found any other centers that are worth a look.
I searched for daycare centers within walking distance of the PQ, mostly using the DC Government’s list of Licensed Day Care Centers.
Although there are many professional daycare centers within walking distance of the PQ, all but 2 that I found are associated with Federal Agencies. Daycare centers associated with federal gov’t agenies allow anyone to get on the waiting list (for a non-refundable fee of about $100 each), but they give preference to Gov’t employees when accepting children into the center, no matter where your spot on the waiting list is. I was told by each of those daycare centers that they have never gotten to accept anyone from the waiting list that was not a Gov’t employee, so not to waist my money getting on the list.
The 2 I found that don’t give preference to Gov’t Employees are:
1) Bright Horizons at Covington Kids
This was setup by the law firm Covington & Burling LLP. It is at 1331 Pennsylvania Avenue and costs about $2000/month!
2) Bright Horizons at East End
This one is at 901 New York Ave., and costs about $1650 a month!
The waiting lists run around 6-12 months. I am on both and my name came up at the New York Ave. center, but I have delayed, because luckily my wife and I have worked out schedules that allows us to alternate days at home for now.
Given these waiting lists, I don’t understand why there are more centers open.
I am a PQ mon expecting my boy mid June!! Thansk for starting this thread. See you all on the yahoo group!
