Shopping With Your Pooch In PQ

Posted by Columbo
November 30, 2008

Last month MVTResident told us about all the restaurants in PQ that would let you dine with your four legged friend.  We thought this time we’d take a look at other PQ businesses that allow you to shop with your pup.

We’ve mentioned them before, but TD Bank (formerly Commerce Bank) at 901 7th ST NW  allows you to do your banking with your dog.  They have bowels bowls of dry dog biscuits available to well behaved canines (and green lollipops for the humans).

The Ace Hardware in the City Vista building at 1055 5th ST NW (as well as many other Ace Hardware stores) lets you shop with your dog.  This location has a recently expanded pet supply section on the ground level, and they too give out milk-bones.

The last pet friendly store we’re aware of is the West Elm at 1020 G ST NW.  We only discovered this last week when we noticed a dog water bowl inside the store next to one of the entrances.  We asked an employee who confirmed that you can do your furniture shopping with your dog.  That seems to make sense, your dog will probably spend more time on your couch than you will.

Are there other pet friendly stores in PQ that we don’t know about?

City Sports on 7th Street allows smaller dogs as does Gallery Market on 5th and Eye, Tunnel Liquor on Mass. Ave. L’Occitane on F Street.

That MVTResident! I really wish Central Liquors on F St allowed dogs, I love that shop but hate having to tie my pup up outside. It’s worth a longer walk for me to Tunnel if they allow all (well behaved) dogs.

barnes and noble is also dog friendly, except for the cafe and children’s areas. always fun to do some browsing with a curious puppy in tow.

B&N? Really? Is that a small-dog only policy or are all dogs welcome? I’ll have to swing by one day this week and ask, thanks for the heads up schvin.

“bowels” of biscuits at TD Bank? Really?

Comment by Steve701Penn on November 30, 2008 @ 6:08 pm

YEP! I deposit more bowels of biscuits than I withdraw :-)

I know many restaurant owners in the neighborhood and they all allow me to bring in my medium sized (40 lb) dog in when i have dinner. I also have taken him into other stores and no one has said anything — if they did, of course, I would remove him. Area dog owners are (for the most part) considerate and responsible.

Some fam was hanging out around the Navy Memorial with their big, but very friendly dog unleashed. He went off and sniffed a nearby little girl, frightening the mother and the group of mom’s with her.

As she walked away, the mother just had to yell very angrily with a disgusted look, “LEASH YOUR DOG!!!” I agree with her, but WOW with the attitude!

And that is my totally off-topic story :-)

I wouldn’t return to a restaurant if I dined next to a dog.

Re: Bowels. Would you believe that since TD Bank has a Canadian parent, I was using the international spelling? You know, like Theatre/Theater or Programme/Program?

Anyone?

Comment by Freddie Mick on December 1, 2008 @ 8:23 pm

Columbo, you are a genius. I spent five years in Canada, but in Montreal, where we spell the semi-spherical object for food “bol” ["saladier" if for salad; "assiette" for soup].
As for the dog off-leash, the mom went ballistic b/c her kid might have a dog phobia now. I love dogs, but people have to realize that some people have dog phobias, & sometimes those phobias are caused by people who let their dogs run free in places where the dogs should be on leash.
Dogs are awesome; people? ugh.

Our dogs behave better than most children. and love to go out with us. We are always looking for places that will let dogs shop and eat with you.

Comment by Mary on December 4, 2008 @ 4:49 pm

Most children won’t bite you, and those that do don’t have teeth sharp enough to leave wounds necessitating stitches.

Thanks for the list of business I will no longer patronize.

I just shopped at Urban Outfitters on 7th with my dog. They had absolutely no problems at all with it. And bought a great artifical tree there for my condo as well!!

Comment by Gina on December 8, 2008 @ 12:03 pm

We love having dogs in our hardware store. In fact, we’re in the process of planning a fun doggy fashion show to highlight some of our pet products and meet more of our neighbors.

Come by for a free biscuit anytime! 1055 5th St. NW in the City Vista building.

Thanks.

Gina

By the way Gina, the brand of dog waste bags that you are selling are a little difficult to open. Perhaps we could have a larger selection? And, is there any way you could carry dog foods like Eukenuba which we can’t find at Safeway?

My dog loves your store and always goes in for his bisuit.

Comment by Gina on December 9, 2008 @ 6:32 am

I can certainly look into different bags – thanks for the feedback. We can’t carry dog food unfortunately. We don’t have enough space for the minimum requirements the brands have.
