Sidewalk Pollution Or Clever Marketing? (pic)

VZ Center Marketing

The Verizon Center marketing machine is in overdrive. We know because these square sidewalk posters advertising the upcoming BB&T Classic college basketball tournament (as well as commemerating the Phone Booth’s (Verizon Center) 10th anniversary) can now be found all over the sidewalk blocks near the Phone Booth. We’ve reported on these posters before but this campaign seems to be bigger than those we’ve seen in the past.

Sidewalk pollution or clever marketing? You make the call.

I heard that the troublesome McDonalds in the Verizon Center is going to be closing for renovations. Does anyone know whether this is true? Maybe it will close down for good.

either you’re a college basketball fan or not. If you are, and are particularly interested in Maryland or GW, you already know about the “Classic”. If not, this kind of advertising that exists solely because it’s in proximity to the Verizon Center isn’t going to make you go.

How many spur-of-the-moment walk-up tickets to non-college basketball fans do they really expect to sell?

It’s a blight and a rediculous waste of advertising resources. They should be fined for whatever amount the city has to pay to clean them up.

If they are renovating that McDonald’s, they should add security cameras inside and outside of the store and a security X-ray and baggage scan at the entrance. Finger printing at the door may be over doing it but not out of the question.

Pollution.

Indifference.

No big deal either way.

Comment by PQ Observer on November 29, 2007 @ 7:36 pm

It is clever marketing, but is an abuse of the public sidewalks. It is also a distraction – people put their heads down, and make it harder to keep people moving in the neighborhood. But that’s the point of advertising, right? In the end, it makes the neighborhood look vibrant, so I approve.

Comment by Kelby on November 29, 2007 @ 7:49 pm

As long as it’s only there a short time, what’s the big deal? Those big permanent flat screens ads at 7&H are far worse.

Anon #4 – I like your thinking.

howdy pq…
i have been living in adams morgan since 1990. i hope pq is successful.
this is the kind of info we get from our blogs/new groups (email below). i suggest you might want to get your council rep. doing the same. adams morgan rep jim graham is a wonderful human being. (this email is from jim graham) we get a bunch of these throughout the week… crime updates, etc…

Dear Friends:

Today I joined Mayor Fenty and Chief Lanier for a press conference at the intersection of Georgia and Harvard to announce new initiatives to combat crew violence in Ward One / 3D.

We have a big problem right now with gang violence. There are currently seven active crews involved in a cycle of shootings. Since October 1 there has been more than 100 shots fired and 11 people wounded.

I have worked closely with Mayor Fenty and Chief Lanier to develop a comprehensive strategy, which we announced today.

First, we have secured $1.8 million to expand ShotSpotters into 3D. This technology will help MPD respond to the exact location of gun shots. It will enable MPD to collect evidence and know when and where shots were fired. It will also help law enforcement in the overall prosecution of these cases.

Second, MPD is strengthening its Gang Intelligence Unit. We should see concrete results of this soon in 3D.

Third, the Mayor has identified $1.2 million dollars to address gang intervention and mediation. This will coordinate the delivery of Human Services to young people and their families who are most vulnerable to recent violence.

While good progress is being made in establishing a truce among the crews in 3D, a lot of work remains to be done.

To see all of my emails on this issue, please go to http://www.grahamwone.com/content/view/56/200/

Bests,
Councilmember Jim Graham

I have renderings up of the 10th + G office/church project. You can post them here. dcthegroundup.blogspot.com

It’s true that Jim Graham does communicate more using email than Jack Evans (if you’re in the Ward 2 part of PQ). However, Councilman Evans does email a weekly newsletter and other announcements once in a while. You can subscribe by sending him an email request (jackevans@dccouncil.us), and you can view his newsletter here: http://www.dccouncil.washington.dc.us/EVANS/Newsletter.html.
