Signs, Signs, Everywhere There’s Signs

Posted by Columbo
July 15, 2007

With several new businesses set to open soon, we thought we’d document some of the new signs going up, and mention a favorite. McDonald’s got their new signs up on Friday (but contrary to what employees told us, have still not opened as of Saturday). Out on the town Saturday we noticed that they’d posted the scariest clown photos ever in their window.

I suspect only the twin girls from “The Shining” could find this advertisement appealing, that is one ugly mug. Bar Louie finally opened, Mrs. Columbo & I checked this out on Friday. I agree with many of the others who wrote in: beer selection is good, music is fun, service is decent, but food isn’t great. The space is huge and fun, but I think it’s drinks only at Bar Louie for this blogger.

West Elm got their new sign recently, can’t wait for this place to open. When all work is completed on the various projects in the Woodies building it should be quite a retail destination. And finally an old favorite, the sign in the window at B&K News Stand on 10th & F. Sure it’s the same level of humor as Spencer Gifts, but it’s still fun to see a few of these stores survive. This store also has a handwritten sign in the window which reads “no no smoking.” We’re not sure if that’s subtle genius like “we don’t need no education” in Pink Floyd’s “Another Brick in the Wall,” or if it’s just a poorly written sign.

oh please let BK not come near our neighborhood.

Comment by DCRay on July 15, 2007 @ 9:22 am

We already have a BK on the NW corner of 5th and G St. See, it’s so out of the way you didn’t know about it! lol

What is the delay in opening the McDonalds?

Comment by Anonymous on July 15, 2007 @ 11:04 am

The BK on 5th and G? Sure everyone knows about it. You just can’t get near it because everyday a group of homeless are there blocking the sidewalk and begging for money.

We also checked out Bar Louie’s..as already stated…Great atmosphere, music and service. The food is horrible and right of the US Food truck..yuk.

I would have preferred Wendy’s. They don’t have scary clowns, just the daughter with the scary pigtails.

On Bar Louie–I’ve been there for lunch twice. First time, great service, second time, horrible service. The food was mediocre both times (and FYI, the pizza they gave us was appetizer-sized at best, while the so-called appetizer sliders they delivered to another table looked bigger than most entrees). With two bars, I think the food’s going to be an after-thought there.

I wouldn’t suggest eating the fries….

Bon appetite!

McDonald’s was training people Friday-Sunday. They said they will open tomorrow (Monday). I might eat there tomorrow. It will be the cleanest McDonald’s at which I ever had a meal. It’s all downhill from there.

Anon: Thanks for the french fry video….good stuff.

Now, consider watching some videos about the meat industry and I guarantee you won’t eat the burgers and nuggets anymore either.

Go Veg!!

Spencer’s is an order of magnitude better than the B & K (isn’t it K & B) but it is easy to see the similarities. I always got my MadLibs at Spencer’s (always located in a mall).

The McDonald’s appeared to be open when I walked by this morning, and Columbo’s reference to the scary pictures was featured in the Express.

Comment by Anonymous on July 16, 2007 @ 12:49 pm

As I said I would, I ate at that McDonald’s this morning. The food didn’t taste any better even though everything is brand new and clean. That is probably the last time I eat there as well.

My wife reported that it was packed at 12:30 for lunch. So much for my dream of them not getting much business and deciding to relocate.

That McD’s will always have lunch clients from across the street.. just saying..

Unrelated (but retail) question–Has Shimba Hills closed, or have they cut back hours? I tried to stop in yesterday afternoon but it was locked up.

Comment by Anonymous on July 16, 2007 @ 9:37 pm

If Shimba hasnt closed yet — it will. I went in there the other day to discuss a marketing arrangement and they are broke — the phone has been turned off and there are other indications that their time is over. Too bad. I hate Fourbucks.

I walked by Shimba Hills this afternoon and they were open (there was someone inside). I think Shimba Hills is a Verizon Center events vendor and makes most of its money selling inside the Verizon Center.

It’s interesting to note that their website is down too. http://www.shimbahillscoffee.com

bar louie.. umm..teh star of the menu is tater tots… so take your cues from that..personally i love tater tots! lol..
shimba hills… been worried about them for a while.. the credit card machine has been “down” for weeks.. so whenever i dont have cash they GIVE me my “unsweetened iced coffee with a double shot of esspreso”..

And yet another sign in the neighborhood.

The Starbucks at 7th and H will be open 24 hours on Friday and Saruday starting tomorrow.

Not sure if this is a good thing or not.

Sorry, the comment form is closed at this time.
