SoHo Space Now For Lease
We never did figure out what happened to the SoHo Cafe & Market located at 401 9th street NW, but the other day we spotted “for lease” signs hanging in the windows. While SoHo may not have been our favorite spot, it filled a need for the downtown workers to grab a quick bite at breakfast & lunch.
What would you all like to see fill this now vacant spot? Butcher? Bakery? Does anyone still think we need a small local grocer or is that need now being filled by the 5th street Safeway?

I hope another lunch place opens up soon, because all the people displaced by the closing of SoHo have crowded up every other lunch place in a 3 block radius. Since it closed, the Subway on 9th Street has become a zoo, for example, with lines out the door and down the street. Hopefully, something will fill the void soon!
Perhaps something like Griffin Market in Georgetown (P and 28th I believe) – grocery, but you can order prepared foods for dinner. How fabulous would that be?
Has anyone heard of a new Italian place going in where Luigino’s was? I heard it’s to open in September but know of no other details.
Post is reporting that Hill Country BBQ is coming … http://voices.washingtonpost.com/goingoutgurus/2009/06/on_the_horizon_hill_country_co.html
We’ve been waiting (promised) for a small grocery store for 5 years in the large space on 7th between D & E. Balducci’s pulled out – I can’t understand why we can’t get a Trader Joe’s or similar. I think the SoHo space is smaller.
Oh, I would LOVE a Trader Joe’s. Or just any basic market where I can buy onions, flour, a gallon of organic milk, and some meat for dinner. Can we really do a write-in campaign?
Trader Joe’s knows they are wanted in Penn Quarter. Why they don’t think it is a money maker is beyond many of us!
TJ’s would be great but agree with Sarah — someplace around the corner to buy bread, milk and fruit would be a great addition to the ‘hood — and yes I know — all you folks who commented to a similar thread a few months ago — there is a Safeway at CityVista, I shop there all the time — It just is not the same
Maybe Trader Joe’s walked into the City Vista Safeway last Sunday afternoon and found the store relatively empty, except for the homeless guy eating out of the box in aisle 4. Or, maybe Trader Joe’s business development department ran a market analysis on the neighborhood.
5th street safeway is great. I usually go sunday mornings, and it is reasonably busy. Last week I went Tuesday evening (combined with a dinner on the patio at Busboys and Poets, it was an altogether great night) and it was very busy – much more than I expected for around 8pm.
So, hill country BBQ is at 410 7th Street – is that the lifestyles usa location? that would be a nice upgrade in general; but it would still be nice to have more retail and not just restaurants on that stretch of 7th street.
Bringing up grocery store memories is like twisting the dagger. MTW–the grocery store promise is more like 10 years old. The developers of the site were required to use the site for a grocer (if possible), and that fact was publicized before they even broke ground. Anon@5:38–I have my gripes about the Safeway, but when I shop on Sunday afternoons it’s nearly always crowded.
It looks like the BBQ place may be taking more than just Lifestyles’ storefront–the Post is reporting this morning that Apartment Zero is also closing.
I wrote a letter to Trader Joe’s about a month ago and never heard back. I’ll write again and mention the positive response. Here’s the link: http://www.traderjoes.com/location_requests_form.aspx
