From the Penn Quarter Neighborhood Association email this morning we learned the following about what’s happening in the downtown neighborhood:
Stanley Cup Playoffs Street Closures and Outdoor Pre-Game Activities on June 4

Traffic and Parking Enforcement
There will be no vehicular traffic in the blocks around theĀ Capital One Arena listed below. The closures will remain in place until approximately 3:00pm on June 11
- F Street, NW from 5th Street to 7th Street, NW
- 6th Street, NW from E Street to H Street, NW
(accessible only to local residents and monthly parking pass holders)- G Street, NW between 5th Street and 6th Street

The following streets will be closed to vehicles during the times noted
- G Street from 7th Street to 9th Street, NW ( 12:00 noon – 12:00 midnight )
- 8th Street from G Street to H Street, NW ( 12:00 noon – 12:00 midnight )
- F Street from 7th Street to 9th Street, NW (3:30pm – 12:00 midnight )
- 8th Street from E Street to F Street, NW (3:30pm – 12:00 midnight )
- 7th Street from E Street to H Street, NW (3:30pm – 12:00 midnight)
NOTE: PLAN AHEAD! If you park in a garage with access from any of these streets you will not be able to move your vehicle in or out of the garage during the hours specified for the street closure. Consider taking Metro to Gallery Pl-Chinatown.
Parking Restrictions for Home Games
From 6:00am until midnight
- No parking on G Street, NW between 7th Street and 9th Street
- No parking on F Street, NW between 7th Street and 9th Street
From 4 pm until four hours after the game ends
No on street* parking will be allowed within the following perimeter (all in the NW quadrant)
- Pennsylvania Avenue to the south
- I Street to the north
- 3rd Street to the east
- 9th Street to the west
NOTE: *For clarity, I added the words ‘on street’ because I thought some might think this also applied to parking in garages.
The public should expect parking restrictions in the area and should be guided by the posted emergency no parking signage. All vehicles that are parked in the area and in violation of the emergency no parking signs will be ticketed and towed. These vehicles will be relocated to legal spaces. Motorists whose vehicles are towed should call 202.541.6083.
All street closures and listed times are subject to change based upon prevailing or unexpected conditions. Motorists will encounter delays if operating in the vicinity of this event and may wish to consider alternative routes. The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) and the District Department of Transportation (DDOT) also wish to remind motorists in the vicinity of this event to proceed with caution as increased pedestrian traffic can be anticipated.
Bike Access
Capital Bikeshare stations will be closed four hours before home games at
- 5th and F Streets, NW and 7th and F Streets, NW
They will reopen four hours after the game
DDOT will set up a bike corral in the area to create additional parking for Capital Bikeshare bikes. The specific location will be announced prior to the first home game.
Public Health
Sanitation Activities/Monday, June 4After AM rush hour (9:30 a.m.), DPW sanitation crews will remove newspaper boxes, the liners from public litter cans, and other easily moved items from inside and outside the barricaded area. Starting four hours before the game, these crews also will clean the streets adjacent to the Capital One Arena.
After the game ends, these crews will return to clean the area within and outside of the barricades.
Extended Public Transit – Metro Service
Metro is extending service for one hour. Revised train times can be found here on Metro’s website.
