Take Me Home From The Ball Game

Posted by Columbo
June 27, 2007

Isn’t it great having a baseball team in town? No more having to make the long (time, if not distance) drive to Baltimore anymore, now an short metro ride gets you to the game easily.

But if you’re like this blogger, you dread the metro ride home (at least if the game is packed and the score close in late innings), knowing that thousands of people are going to be heading down into the metro at the same time as you.

Here are two alternatives for getting back to PQ if you want to skip the train (and assuming you are not driving).

One option is to walk home, although for many this is really only an option for day games. On a recent Sunday afternoon this blogger walked home from a baseball game. Took about 40 minutes to get to My Brother’s Place over on 2nd & Constitution Ave NW. They were packed so I walked another 15 or 20 mins to Harry’s instead. Total time to walk from RFK to Harry’s was about an hour, and who can’t use a pleasant 3 mile walk after a few beers & dogs?

Another option is the D6 bus, and this option splits into two paths. You can ride the D6 (towards Sibley Hospital) either all the way into PQ, or get off at Union Station. I’ve taken this ride quite a few times; it’s not fast but it does go right up E ST (after leaving Union Station) from North Capitol to about 13th ST. Weekdays the bus runs late, and has service fairly often, weekends the bus also runs late, but there are longer delays between pickups. The D6 is also a decent option for getting to the games, if you don’t mind the delays around Union Station.

Are there any other good options for getting to RFK? The new park will be about 2 miles (as the crow flies) from PQ, but I’m not sure anyone would walk it.

Walk over to Potomac Avenue Metro, have a few stiff drinks at Trustys, and go home when the crowds thin out.

I’d probably walk to the new stadium before I’d walk to RFK. It seems shorter and slightly more safe (although I haven’t actually walked to either). I’d walk down 9th (since I’m at the Artisan), and then across the mall, past L’Enfant Plaza down to the water front. Then take a left on M street and down 4 or 5 blocks to the new stadium site.

You could bike it.

Biking it! Anon 1:42; that’s a good idea. Any idea if there are good (safe) bike racks around there?

Anon 1:22; the walk to the new stadium may be nice, esp when the new stadium is complete. Still I find the walk to/from RFK to be very nice right now. Cap Hill is such a nice part of DC.

Monkeyrotica; I almost included that walk, and the walk to Cap South for the bars on Penn Ave SE, but my post was already way too long.

You sure are brave to walk from RFK, even during daylight hours.

Anon 3:18; Really? It’s only 8 blocks to Lincoln Park, which has families and people out all the time. From Lincoln Park in to the Capitol is a beautiful, and I think reasonably safe walk.

Plus you’d have decent crowds making the same walk, at least as far as Eastern Market.

For the new stadium, it’s a straight shot down 7th to Maine Ave, then across on M. But a lot of that is residential and not well-lit, and may be iffy at night if the crowds aren’t big enough. The North-South Circulator route is another option for getting there–but as soon as people figure that out I’m sure the buses will be swamped.

Biking is the way to go. There are two sets of good bike racks–one off the main entry drive, to the left, by the fence that surrounds the parking area. The other is by the ticket booth on the left side of the stadium.

Anon 3:18 is crazy. The area is completely different from how it was a few years ago. There are always huge crowds walking towards Lincoln Park after games, and it’s fine after Lincoln Park. The only thing that would require bravery is doing the RFK-to-Lincoln-Park walk (1) alone, after (2) a night game, but even then you’d likely be near a number of other people.

I’ll third the biking option. When I lived in Lincoln Park, I’d always bike to Gallery Place to catch shows at DC Space, Insect Club, or the old 9:30. On the weekend it was MUCH faster than waiting for the connection at Federal Center/Metro Center. Massachusetts to to East Cap and straight to RFK. I believe there are bike racks at the Metro escalators.

I’ve walked from RFK to the Capitol area where I live many, many times, day and night, and never once had a hint of a problem. It’s a beautiful walk, actually. And safe.
