Street Elevator Action
You don’t see too many of these street elevators (sidewalk vaults?) in DC, at least not in the kind of numbers that you see them in NY & Chicago. We’ve caught this one outside of Ollie’s Trolley in use a few times for garbage pickups. Presumably most downtown DC buildings have loading docks so these street elevators are not needed for deliveries as they might be in other cities?

The CVS at 8th & E needs one of those!!
(If you have not seen the deliveries there it is total chaos)
The one you photographed is the only one I’ve ever seen in action here in DC in 16 years. Just another one of the clever ideas from the “old days” that have fallen by the wayside, along with pocket doors and dumbwaiters.
I’ve seen a few in use in SE Capitol Hill (near Cap Lounge for one). Can’t remember if I’ve seen any in use in other parts of the city.

I haven’t seen a street elevator operating in ages. I always thought it would be one heck of a surprise to be standing on top of the cover and have one of those pop up underneath.
