600 Mass Ave Passes Another HPRB Milestone & 709-711 D St Action (Union Hardware)
During the October 5, 2006 meeting of the Historic Preservation Review Board (HPRB), the 600 Mass Ave mega-project passes another milestone:
- 600 Massachusetts Avenue, NW (609-631 I Street, NW), HPA #06-289, concept/demolition, new construction.
The board approved the staff report including conceptual approval with suggestions for further refinements. Vote 6-0.
We think the developer is frequently improving their design because the project details are voted on at almost every HPRB meeting.
Update:
Also, on the agenda for the October 26 hearing is this bit:
- Pennsylvania Avenue National Historic Site
709-11 D Street, NW, HPA #06-386, alteration/addition
This is the site of the vacant Union Hardware storefront.

I understand that José Andrés will be opening up a pupusa restaurant in the Union Hardware space, and the block will be named “Andrés Latintown.”
BK would have to sell a whole lot of bongs, swords, and eagle statues to afford what Doug Jemal is charging for the Union Hardware space!
Oh anonymous 10/13/2006 03:42:14 PM, how do you know how much the tokens cost? Have you been doing some “research” over at BK.
Seriously though, this must be a joke. I had heard that the space might become a condo building, but it doesn’t seem likely. Maybe it will be the Trader Joe’s Wine Shop. On our trip to NYC last weekend, we visited the TJ’s in Union Square. It has a seperate wine shop!
Sorry, the comment form is closed at this time.
Ooooh I’d be so excited if something went into the Union Hardware space. Are there any more details about the addition/alteration on the board’s site? I forgot the link.
